The build-up to this game will revolve around Graham Potter, the man who recently left Brighton to take up the role of Chelsea’s new manager.

While many believe that Potter deserved his chance at a top club, there will be some Brighton fans that feel he shouldn’t have left them in the middle of the season, especially when they had started the campaign so well.

Indeed, the Seagulls were in the top four when Potter was approached by Chelsea, although have now slipped to 9th in the league in a winless run of five games under Roberto De Zerbi.

It is a run that has shown just how important Graham Potter was as Brighton’s coach, and how sorely he is being missed right now.

On the other hand, Chelsea’s fortunes have improved since Potter’s arrival. His team are on the verge of the top four, while they have qualified from their Champions League group after a good run of form there.

Brighton will be desperate to show that Potter made the wrong decision here.

Brighton & Hove Albion Preview

Reasons to be cheerful:

Will be motivated to beat Potter’s Chelsea

Often play well against teams who attack them

Reasons to be fearful:

Have never beaten Chelsea in 10 attempts in the league

No wins from De Zerbi’s five games in charge

Who knows how Brighton’s season would have continued if Graham Potter would have remained in charge at Brighton?

We all know how well they started, with four wins from their first six and a place two points off the top spot. Perhaps they would still be near the top of the table, or maybe they would have fallen away.

Nevertheless, there has been a fall in results since. Roberto De Zerbi was described as having the same style of play as Potter, although the players are clearly getting used to his methods right now.

This is a tough fixture for Brighton, with no wins from their 10 meetings in the Premier League. To make matters worse, the Seagulls have never held a lead against Chelsea during that time.

With Brighton also struggling for goals recently, they will need significant improvements to win here.

Star Man – Leandro Trossard

Trossard scored his sixth goal of the season in Brighton’s defeat against Manchester City last weekend. If only he had a top-class goalscorer alongside him and Brighton would score more.

Chelsea FC Preview

Reasons to be cheerful

     Great record against Brighton

Seven wins from 10 games under Potter

Reasons to be fearful

Were largely outplayed by Manchester United last weekend

Brighton will have extra motivation to beat Chelsea this weekend

Games such as these, where managers return to their previous clubs, always have a bit of extra needle.

Brighton will want to prove that they are a better team without Potter and that Roberto De Zerbi is perfectly capable of leading them going forward.

On the other hand, no one knows Brighton’s players like Graham Potter and is likely to have a plan to beat them.

Chelsea’s form since he took over has been near-perfect, certainly in terms of results. Seven wins and no defeats from his first 10 games, including some big wins in the Champions League, shows how well he has settled.

Although Chelsea have a great record against Brighton, the Blues won’t find this easy. Not only are Brighton still a fine team, they will also have extra motivation here.

Star Man – Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang

The Gabon striker was quiet against Manchester United last weekend, though he’ll be desperate to get back on the scoring trail here. He has three goals from his eight appearances against Brighton from his Arsenal days.

     Will be a close match

     Both teams to score

Chelsea’s extra quality to pay off

Brighton have often played well against teams that play on the front foot themselves.

Graham Potter had an excellent record against the big teams in his tenure at the club, because of how well his team were set up to counterattack.

Now, it is his team who are the favourites and will need to break down a talented and organised team.

Brighton are still waiting for their first win under De Zerbi and that is likely to continue here unless they can really up their game.
