Brighton in danger of letting Europe spot slip away as they host in-form Wolves
Brighton to win 2-1
Tournament: Premier League 2022-2023 | Venue: Brighton and Hove, Amex Stadium
Bet NowBrighton are in danger of spoiling their great work this season, unless they can get back on track in the race for European football next season.
In the league, the Seagulls have lost two of their last three, although both have come away from home. They also lost out in the FA Cup Semi Final to Manchester United, albeit in a tight penalty shootout.
They have three games in hand over most of the rivals, and could see rise into 5th should they win them all. Roberto De Zerbi’s men will want to bounce back with victory here.
In their way is a strong and resilient Wolves team that continue to impress under Julen Lopetegui. With three wins from their last four, they have all but confirmed their place in next season’s Premier League.
Another win from their remaining five fixtures should be enough, although Lopetegui will be in no mood to take his foot off the gas now.
Reasons to be cheerful:
Claimed 13 points from the last 16 available at the Amex
Kept clean sheets in each of their last four home victories
Reasons to be fearful:
Lost three of their last four in all competitions
A number of injury concerns, including Evan Ferguson and Danny Welbeck
Regardless of what happens in the final month of the season, Brighton can still consider themselves to have had an extremely successful campaign.
However, they could make it one to remember by claiming an incredible 5th spot, securing European football for next season as they do.
To do that, they’ll need to win their three games in hand, two of which are against both Manchester clubs, and improve their current run of form.
It’s true that their three defeats in recent times have all come away from the Amex, but they need to shake off the hangover that appears to have settled since losing in the FA Cup to Manchester Unuted.
They’ve been brilliant at home this season and you wouldn’t bet against them returning to winning ways here.
Star Man – Kaoru Mitoma
His pace and trickery make him a nightmare for defenders. He’s been quiet in recent weeks, but you wouldn’t bet against him having a strong end to the season.
Reasons to be cheerful
Three wins from their last four
Won nine of their 22 games under Lopetegui
Reasons to be fearful
Would be fourth from bottom based on away form
No clean sheets from any of their last 13 on their travels
The Wanderers have reaped the benefits of appointing Julen Lopetegui as their manager, with the club making the decision to sack Bruno Lage as soon as they entered the bottom three.
They have won nine of their 22 games under the Spaniard, lifting them seven points clear of the relegation places. It remains to be seen how they finish their season, but they could realistically finish 11th ahead of Crystal Palace and Chelsea.
Wolves have two winnable games coming up at home, although their away fixtures include Manchester United and Arsenal, as well as Brighton this weekend.
Their concerns on the road stem from their inability to keep clean sheets, with none from their previous 13. This could be a good time to play Brighton, of course, but they need to improve themselves.
Star Man – Ruben Neves
Wolves’ last six goals have all been scored by different players, meaning it’s hard to predict who will next find the net for them. Neves, at the base of midfield, is a consistent performer for Wolves and chips in with goals too.
Brighton will be boosted by home crowd
Can Wolves keep an away clean sheet?
Hard to predict where goals will come from
While both teams have key players in attack, neither side has an out-and-out goalscorer like most teams in the division.
It should make for an interesting clash, what with Brighton struggling of late and Wolves often poor away from home this season.
You’d expect Brighton to bounce back with victory, however, especially at home.
