Newcastle’s consistency continues to impress many, with the Magpies currently boasting the longest unbeaten streak in any of the top five leagues around Europe.

Eddie Howe returns to face his former club this weekend, knowing that he can take his current side back into 3rd place with victory here. The Magpies still have the best defensive record in the league.

Wins have fallen away of late, however. With just two from their last six, they are now looking over their shoulder at the likes of Tottenham catching up.

Bournemouth have only Southampton to look at over their shoulder, with the Cherries stuck firmly in 19th place. Gary O’Neil’s men haven’t won since the World Cup.

With a tough run of fixtures coming up for Bournemouth, you wonder how they can get themselves out of this mess. How long will it be before the new ownership considers a change of manager?

AFC Bournemouth Preview

Reasons to be cheerful:

Dango Ouattara looks a promising signing in attack

Could be a good time to face Newcastle who have other priorities

Reasons to be fearful:

Just one victory from their last 12 league games

Winless in all 11 matches against top-half clubs this season

It now seems a long time ago that Bournemouth were enjoying a new lease of life under the caretaker management of Gary O’Neil.

Scott Parker’s sacking opened the door for the youthful leadership of O’Neil, which brought about wins and points in the top half of the league.

Now, firmly in the bottom three, Bournemouth’s owners will wonder if a more experienced manager is required in these circumstances.

The signing of Dango Ouattara looks a positive one and Dominic Solanke and Marcus Tavernier are working their way back to fitness after injury layoffs.

With Newcastle facing Liverpool next and then Manchester United in the Carabao Cup final, it could be a good time to play the Magpies. The Cherries need to be at their best, however.

Star Man – Antoine Semenyo

The January signing from Bristol City has bags of pace and can unsettle defences with his direct running, as he nearly did against Brighton recently. He’ll need to be at his best to get the better of a tight Newcastle defence.

Newcastle United Preview

Reasons to be cheerful

Unbeaten in 16 league games – the best record from across Europe’s top leagues

Aiming for their fourth consecutive away clean sheet

Reasons to be fearful

Have bigger fish to fry with Liverpool and Manchester United up next

Wins have somewhat dried up with four draws from their last five matches

It’s testament to what Eddie Howe has achieved with this squad in such a short space of time that Newcastle can look ahead to games against Liverpool and Manchester United with ambition and optimism.

They will go into those games, the latter against the Red Devils in the Carabao Cup final, feeling that they are capable of winning both of them.

Unfortunately, the wins have dried up a little of late. While going unbeaten is brilliant, most of their results lately have been draws. It has seen them slip behind Manchester United into 4th place.

That said, the Magpies are well positioned to win this game, with Alexander Isak returning from a concussion injury. Bruno Guimaraes, however, misses out serving the second game of a three-match ban.

Anthony Gordon could earn his first start for the club.

Star Man – Callum Wilson

It took Wilson three minutes to race onto a perfect through-ball and slot into the back of the net against West Ham. It was his seventh of the season and his presence upfront makes him a handful for defenders.

     Newcastle should edge possession

Bournemouth must make the most of any chances on goal

     Probably a low-scoring contest

You only need to look at Newcastle’s results this season to know that they are usually low-scoring contests. They don’t concede many at all, which means they don’t need to score too many either.

There have only been three goals scored in total across Newcastle’s last five league games, which means that this game is likely to be settled by the odd goal.

If Bournemouth are to claim anything, they must take advantage of anything that falls their way in front of goal – it may not happen often.

Newcastle are favourites to clinch victory here.
