Bournemouth must face the fact that they are now locked firmly in a relegation battle, one that is likely to last until the end of the season.

The Cherries don’t seem to have the players or the momentum to pull themselves out of trouble right now. They are conceding plenty of goals and scoring very few – the worst combination.

Gary O’Neil suddenly looks a little out of his depth as Bournemouth manager and it won’t be long before their new owners may have a decision to make.

On the other hand, Nottingham Forest finally look like a Premier League team after a string of decent results before and after the World Cup break.

Although they’ve dropped out of the FA Cup, they’ve made it to the Semi-Finals of the Carabao Cup and back-to-back wins in the Premier League.

AFC Bournemouth Preview

Reasons to be cheerful:

Have won four of their last five meetings against Forest

Beat Forest in 3-2 thriller earlier this season

Reasons to be fearful:

Lost eight of their last nine in all competitions

Only Wolves have scored fewer than Bournemouth’s nine goals this season

Of the teams battling near the bottom of the table, Bournemouth and Leicester are the only two to have lost their last four on the bounce.

Wolves have a new manager and have shown signs of improvement. Southampton are in a similar position, albeit currently at the bottom of the league.

Bournemouth, alongside West Ham, Leicester and Everton, are in the worst form currently and one or two will likely change their manager before long. Club owners fear the thought of relegation more than anything else.

The Cherries have a good record against Nottingham Forest, winning four of their last five. One of those was this season, when O’Neil’s men came from two goals down to win 3-2, one of their finest results.

The club will likely want to do business in the January transfer window, with reinforcements needed to improve the team in several areas.

Here, Solanke will miss the next few games through injury, while Tavernier will also be on the sidelines.

Star Man – Ryan Christie

Christie has scored Bournemouth’s only goal since November. With Solanke and Tavernier out injured, the pressure will be on for him to produce once more.

Nottingham Forest FC Preview

Reasons to be cheerful

Three wins and one defeat from their last five is big progress

New signings are starting to gel finally

Reasons to be fearful

Just two goals from their nine away games this season

May have one eye of their Semi-Final a few days later

Nottingham Forest can be pleased with how this phase of the season is going, having spent much of the first part in the bottom three.

Although they have played very well since the Premier League restart after the World Cup, there were signs of recovery before then, with wins over Liverpool in the league and Tottenham in the Carabao Cup.

More recently, they’ve beaten Crystal Palace, Southampton and Leicester, also earning a point against Chelsea to propel up them up the league table.

Remarkably, they also have a Semi-Final to look forward to against Manchester United in a few days. Could they suffer here because they already have one eye on that game?

On the injury front, Dean Henderson will miss the next month or so in goal with a thigh injury.

Star Man – Brennan Johnson

Scored a brilliant brace in the win over Leicester, supported well by record signing Morgan Gibbs-White. He’s Forest’s top scorer now with six.

Bournemouth have to go for the win

     Forest to play with confidence

     Expect a low-scoring game

In Bournemouth’s position, wins are the only thing that can ease the pressure on their shoulders.

With others down there scrapping for points, it’s vital that the Cherries halt their losing streak quickly. Nottingham Forest would be content with a point but have the quality to put Bournemouth under pressure.

If the Cherries concede early, their heads could drop. Forest may have one eye already on their huge cup game against Manchester United, which could see this game end all square.
