Imperious Brazil take on fellow winners Switzerland in Group G decider
Brazil to win 3-1
Tournament: FIFA World Cup 2022 | Venue: Ras Abu Aboud, Stadium 974
Bet NowBrazil turned on the power to full throttle in their second half against Serbia, eventually running out 2-0 winners to head to the top of Group G.
With goals from Richarlison, fine performances from Vinicius and players like Gabriel Jesus and Antony to come off the bench, the Brazilians gave us a timely reminder of their strength at this tournament.
Unfortunately, they will be without Neymar for the remaining group games, having suffered an ankle injury. His dynamism and unpredictability will be missed, although they have the players to cover him.
Switzerland were slightly less convincing as they saw off Cameroon to earn three points. Despite keeping a clean sheet, their opponents had several opportunities to take the lead.
Eventually, Switzerland put together the best move of the match from which Breel Embolo netted the winner. Their performance won’t set the world alight, but it does mean they come into this with some confidence.
FIFA Ranking: 1
Predicted Finish: Winners
Reasons to be cheerful:
Richarlison looks in top form upfront for the Brazilians
Have arguably the strongest squad at the tournament
Reasons to be fearful:
Will be without Neymar until the knockout stages
Need to be more clinical as the tournament goes on
Just when it seemed that Brazil had won the game against Serbia with a show of second half power, they demonstrated the strength of their squad by bringing on the likes of Antony, Martinelli and Jesus.
While they will miss the genius of Neymar over the next two matches, the Selecao will feel confident that they have the quality to cope without too many issues.
At any rate, Neymar was largely outshone by Richarlison and Vinicius in that opening game. If they click again here, we’re sure to see more goals from the pair.
Brazil coach Tite may resist the urge to make too many changes from the Serbia game.
Casemiro was the midfield general he always is, although Lucas Paqueta and Raphinha may find their place under question after offering very little in the first half.
Star Man – Richarlison
His two goals, including a spectacular overhead kick, set the tournament alight for the favourites to lift the trophy. He looks at home as Brazil’s number nine.
FIFA Ranking: 15
Predicted Finish: Round of 16
Reasons to be cheerful
Beat Cameroon despite not being at their best
Have the players to cause one or two problems for Brazil
Reasons to be fearful
Must be more fluid going forward
Not sure they have the defence to keep Brazil at bay
Switzerland are rather an unknown quantity right now.
On the one hand, they earned a valuable win in their opening game, putting them in a good position to qualify from the group.
On the other, they were not anything as fluid going forward as we might expect from a nation that has regularly made the World Cup knockout stages in recent tournaments.
While Breel Embolo is a fine striker, the likes of Xherdan Shaquiri and Ruben Vargas offered very little from wide areas for much of the game.
Xhaka and Freuler looked solid if unspectacular in the middle of the park, and you wonder how they’ll fare against the quality and power of Casemiro and co. of Brazil.
Should they lose this game, they face a nervy test against the Serbians, who will have probably beaten Cameroon in the other fixture. That will set up a winner-takes-all clash to see who will progress further in the competition.
Star Man – Breel Embolo
His pace is sure to cause defences problems, but can he receive the service he needs from his teammates?
Can Richarlison add to his tally?
Can the Swiss cope with Brazil’s quality?
You fear for Switzerland if they concede early
Brazil have the opportunity to set down a marker for the other big nations at the World Cup in this game.
Power through a solid Switzerland side, without their talisman Neymar, and they’ll be seen by many as the team to beat at this tournament. They have more quality on their bench than many teams do altogether.
Switzerland have quality too, it must be said, but they failed to impress against Cameroon. They will be pinned back at times here, and you wonder if their defence has the ability to keep Brazil out.
The chances are they don’t.
