It's a battle between two London-based teams, Brentford and Crystal Palace.

After enjoying decent first two seasons in the Premier League, finishing 13th and 9th respectively, Brentford struggled in the 2022-23 campaign. They narrowly avoided relegation, ending the season in 16th place with 39 points.

Crystal Palace, on the other hand, had a more successful season. Despite a five-point deduction and a managerial change, they secured a respectable 10th position with 49 points, comprising 13 wins, 15 losses, and 10 draws. Oliver Glasner, who replaced Roy Hodgson, will continue as the Eagles' manager for the 2024-25 season.

Brentford FC Preview

Brentford's form dipped significantly during the middle of last season, as they lost 14 of their 18 matches. This slump plunged them into a relegation battle. However, a strong late-season run, including several crucial victories, helped them secure their Premier League status. Their 16th-place finish is commendable given the challenges they faced: playing over half a season without key striker Ivan Toney and enduring a severe injury crisis.

Defensive vulnerabilities were exposed, particularly from crosses, highlighting an area for improvement. Despite these setbacks, Bryan Mbeumo emerged as Brentford's MVP, contributing nine goals and six assists. His importance was magnified during Toney's absence, a period in which the team won only two of 13 matches.

Tactically, Thomas Frank favors a 4-3-3 formation but has shown flexibility by occasionally employing a three-at-the-back system. When fully fit, Brentford's attacking potential is maximized with Mbeumo and Yoane Wissa cutting inside to support Toney, while full-backs Rico Henry and Aaron Hickey provide width. The recent signing of attacking midfielder Fabio Carvalho further strengthens the squad.

Brentford Starting Lineup : Flekken (GK), Ajer, Pinnock, Collins, Roerslev (Defenders); Jensen, Norgaard, Janelt (Midfielders); Mbeumo, Wissa, Tony (Forwards)

Crystal Palace Preview

When Oliver Glasner replaced Roy Hodgson, Crystal Palace were in the relegation zone, five points adrift of safety with thirteen games remaining. Not only did he guide the club to safety, but he also secured a top-half finish, winning seven of the final thirteen matches, including six consecutively.

Jean-Philippe Mateta's resurgence coincided with this impressive run. After scoring just twice in his first nineteen games, he netted an astonishing fourteen goals in the subsequent sixteen, including a hat-trick on the final day against Aston Villa.

This remarkable form saw him finish with sixteen goals and five assists, becoming the first Frenchman to score in seven consecutive home games since Thierry Henry for Arsenal in 2004. Glasner will undoubtedly expect a similar level of performance from Mateta this season, especially from the outset.

However, the departure of Michael Olise to Bayern Munich is a significant loss. The winger, who excelled at the recent Euro Cup, contributed ten goals and six assists last season. While Ismaila Sarr has been signed as a replacement, Eberechi Eze, who created eighteen more chances than any other Palace player, will need to step up. Eze also chipped in with eleven goals and four assists.

Glasner has predominantly employed a three-at-the-back system since his arrival, and this is expected to continue. The formation is likely to fluctuate between a 3-4-2-1 and a 3-4-3, with the latter favored for the upcoming campaign.

Crystal Palace Starting Lineup -  Henderson (GK), Guehi, Andersen, Richards, Mitchell (Defenders);  Hughes, Wharton, Munoz, Eze (Midfielders); Kamada, Mateta (Forwards)

The Brentford-Crystal Palace rivalry is relatively young, dating back only three years. In their six Premier League encounters, Crystal Palace holds the advantage with one win and five draws. This record is unique for both clubs: Brentford has never beaten Palace in the league, and Palace has never lost to Brentford. Brentford, in fact, has drawn five of their last eight Premier League matches.

Based on recent form, Crystal Palace appears to be in a stronger position. They impressed in preseason with three wins and two draws, scoring fourteen goals. Brentford, on the other hand, managed only one win, one loss, and three draws. Considering their historical pattern of draws against Palace, a similar outcome seems likely this time.
