West against East London meet with high-flying Brentford hosting Crystal Palace
Brentford to win 1-0
Tournament: Premier League 2022-2023 | Venue: Brentford, Brentford Community Stadium
Brentford and Crystal Palace meetings are yet to give us a winner from their first three attempts. Perhaps we can see one here, with the home side playing some of the best football in the league right now.
The Bees have gone on a long unbeaten run stretching back to the 23rd October when they were humbled 4-0 by Aston Villa.
Since that moment, they have been virtually flawless, beating the likes of Manchester City and Liverpool and cementing at top-half spot. Can they continue that run here?
Crystal Palace, on the other hand, haven’t won a game in quite some time. Patrick Vieira’s men don’t concede many goals, but they don’t score too many either.
They are currently seven points clear of the relegation places and you would expect them to steer well clear of danger this season.
However, it’s the same inconsistencies that keep them in a similar position season after season.
Reasons to be cheerful:
Have gone unbeaten in their last 10 league games
Ivan Toney has been in sensational form of late
Reasons to be fearful:
Are yet to beat Crystal Palace
Do they rely on Toney too much?
Brentford’s phenomenal run continues this season.
Their goal is to get into Europe, although that may be a little too much to ask for with Liverpool and Chelsea breathing down their neck and the likes of Brighton and Fulham slightly better placed ahead of them.
Nevertheless, the Bees are in a great position right now and are a formidable unit at the Community Stadium. Ten games unbeaten in the league demonstrates their organisation and determination.
One team they have never beaten in the Premier League is Crystal Palace, with their three previous meetings ending as a draw. By ending that and claiming victory, they could climb as high as 6th.
Star Man – Ivan Toney
Do Brentford rely on Toney too much? Probably, but when you have a player this good, it’s not surprising when he scores 58% of their goals across their last seven games. It’s now 15 for the season.
Reasons to be cheerful
Claimed an important point against Brighton last weekend
Defender Guehi and goalkeeper Guaita have been in fine form lately
Reasons to be fearful
Just one win from nine games in all competitions
Wilf Zaha remains injured
Crystal Palace remain seven points ahead of the relegation zone, although there is a feeling that fans are starting to look over their shoulder at teams below them now.
The Eagles have gone seven games without victory in all competitions and are in a rut in terms of scoring goals. They don’t concede many but they have become blunt in front of goal, especially without the injured Zaha.
Teams in the middle of the table are bunched together closely, so a couple of positive results would see them back in the mix to push into the top half.
However, should their poor run continue they could find themselves in trouble. On the plus side, the likes of Marc Guehi and Vincent Guaita are shining lights at the back for the club.
Star Man – Michael Olise
Without Zaha, Palace look desperately short of goals. The likes of Olise, Eze, Mateta, Ayew and Edouard need to find a combination that works going forward.
Brentford will control possession
Expect a low-scoring game
Toney to contribute yet again
Crystal Palace only had 27% of the ball in their game against Brighton last weekend and there is little reason to expect anything different here.
Palace are a passive team without the ball and lack the energy to win the ball back higher up the pitch. Brentford, on the other hand, are energetic, direct and have greater quality on the ball.
The home side have been excellent this season and are favourites to claim three points.
