There is a familiar confidence sweeping around Liverpool football club right now, one that we’ve seen in recent seasons where success has usually followed.

Jurgen Klopp’s men started slowly, with just four wins coming from their opening 10 league games. Since then, they have put their foot to the floor and closed the gap to the teams in front of them.

The top four no longer seems quite so far out of reach and three points here would bring the Champions League places within touching distance.

For Brentford, the Champions League places aren’t a realistic objective, although they have sat within the top four earlier this season.

The Bees have proven hard to beat this season, thanks to their superb organisation and energy across the entire 90 minutes.

They’ll give Liverpool a tough test at home.

Reasons to be cheerful:

     Toney should be available despite picking up a knock recently

     Have scored six goals against Manchester City, Spurs and West Ham recently

Reasons to be fearful:

     Have conceded as many as they have scored this season

     Haven’t beaten Liverpool since 1938

Last year, Brentford and Liverpool gave us one of the games of the season with a thrilling 3-3 draw at the Gtech Community Stadium and the hope is that we can see another entertaining clash here.

That was a twisting, turning game in which both teams took the lead at one stage before Brentford scored a late equaliser to claim a famous point for the club.

The Bees’ manager Thomas Frank knows that, under the lights at home, Brentford can make life very difficult for Liverpool. 

Their one concern will be surrounding the fitness of Ivan Toney, their star striker and top scorer this season. He was stretchered off in the win over West Ham but could be available here if he passes a late test.

Yoane Wissa could take his place if Toney is unfit, with Brentford seeking their first win over Liverpool in over 80 years.

May be fit enough for this game and Brentford will pray that he is. He has been electric this season, with 13 goals in his 18 appearances.

     Injury list grows with Elliott and Robertson coming off against Leicester

     Have already matched their away goals conceded number from the entire last season

With Liverpool’s injury list growing, it will come as a welcome relief for Jurgen Klopp that he can consider new signing Cody Gakpo for selection.

Both Harvey Elliott and Andy Robertson limped off during Liverpool’s win over Leicester recently, joining the likes of Jota, Diaz and Jones on the treatment table. 

Upfront, Mo Salah continues to be as ruthless as ever, while Darwin Nunez creates chances aplenty with his pace and power. His finishing will need to improve to justify £85m, of course.

Despite the 2-1 victory over Leicester, their players admitted that they weren’t at their best, and they will need to up their game in order to claim another three points.

Salah continues to lead Liverpool’s attack with great quality and effectiveness, making up for the wastefulness of his strike partner Nunez. He has 16 goals from his 24 appearances.
