Erik ten Hag would have hoped his era at Manchester United would have gotten off to a positive start.

Instead, his side were poor against a Brighton team who looked better in every area of the pitch. By halftime, they were 2-0 down. Although United came out the better side in the second half, they didn’t deserve anything from the contest.

In the week that has followed, a number of players have been linked with the club, signifying United’s lack of transfer strategy that fans hoped had improved.

Brentford showed a stirring response to come back from 2-0 down against Leicester, earning a point. 

They will present another tricky opponent for United, especially at their home stadium. Their fans have been brilliant since they earned promotion to the Premier League two seasons ago.

Don’t expect this to be easy for United.

One positive for Brentford is that their organised, hard-working style of football is likely to cause United some problems this weekend.

As we’ve seen since the start of last season, United struggle against sides who are hard to break down and play a high-pressing style of football.

In Toney, they have a top striker who can score goals against any opposition and he is backed up by the likes of Dasilva and Wissa who can also hit the target.

They will need to be wary of a response from United, who will be under immense pressure to perform.

It could be a long road ahead for United and their fans this season.

If last weekend is anything to go by, we could be seeing many of the same problems from last season continuing to haunt them during this campaign.

Erik ten Hag will be convinced that he can turn things around, otherwise he wouldn’t have taken on the job. However, it’s going to take more than a few weeks of training sessions and more recruits will be needed.

Although they beat Brentford twice last season, the performances weren’t as convincing as the 3-1 and 3-0 scorelines suggest.

This won’t be easy for them.

If he is fit, he will start for sure. They missed a focal point during the first half last weekend, and will need his goals going forward.
