Mouth-watering clash sees top-four chasing Newcastle head to brilliant Brentford
Brentford 1-1 Newcastle
Tournament: Premier League 2022-2023 | Venue: Brentford, Brentford Community Stadium
Bet NowA clash between Brentford and Newcastle may just be one of the best games across this round of fixtures, with two of the best teams this season going head-to-head.
Brentford lost to Manchester United in midweek, looking a shadow of their usual selves at times and offering little of their usual drive and energy going forward. They gave United an easier game than it should have been.
At home, however, they are usually fantastic and will give Newcastle a tough ride here. The Bees have lost just once at home all season, against league leaders Arsenal, and will be keen to bounce back from defeat here.
As for Newcastle, they have exploded back into life over the past month or so. In the build up to the Carabao Cup final, the Magpies suffered from a dip in form which brought three draws and two defeats.
Now, with four wins on the bounce, they look in a good place to finish in the top four this season.
Reasons to be cheerful:
Lost just once at home this season
Scored nine goals in their last six games
Reasons to be fearful:
Were hammered 5-1 by Newcastle earlier this season
No wins from their last three
Brentford’s form has taken a slight tumble of late, just at the wrong point of the season too as they look to finish in a European position for next year.
While they have continued to progress since their 13th placed finish last campaign, they will want to make sure that they end this season strongly to push on once again next year.
They were uncharacteristically flat against Manchester United in midweek but they have an opportunity to bounce back straight away against another side that have continually impressed this season.
Like Brentford, Newcastle don’t lose too many games and play in an eye-catching, high-tempo style. It will be a great battle of tactics and talented individuals.
Although Brentford were hammered by Newcastle earlier in the season, they will expect things to be different at home.
Star Man – Ivan Toney
Toney was kept quiet for large periods against United in midweek, but always seems to come alive before too long. At home, with the crowd behind you, you’d back him to find the net.
Reasons to be cheerful
Scored 11 goals over their last four games
Seeking their fifth consecutive win
Reasons to be fearful
Very few teams beat Brentford at home
Tough upcoming fixture list to remain in top three
Newcastle are on fire right now and are alongside Arsenal and Manchester City in winning each of their last four games.
It’s a run that has seen them overtake Tottenham and Manchester United into 3rd, where they will remain if they continue to earn similar results.
They have a tough upcoming fixture list, however, that will test their strength near the top. After a tricky trip the Brentford, they travel to in-form Aston Villa, then face top-four challengers Tottenham before a trip to relegation candidates Everton.
Their squad, and their mental strength, will be tested in what will prove to be an exciting April for Eddie Howe’s men.
They now have competition for places in key areas. Even though Almiron has been injured recently, the likes of Willock and Murphy have stepped up, while Isak and Wilson have rivalled one another for the number nine shirt.
Star Man – Callum Wilson
Wilson responded brilliantly to being left out of the team in place of Isak by netting three goals in his last two appearances. He appears to be fresh and ready for the closing chapter of the season.
Should be a game full of energy
Neither teams concedes many
Toney or Wilson to score the winner?
The similarities between Brentford and Newcastle are easy to pick out – they both have excellent managers, well-organised teams and individuals of high quality in key areas.
In Ivan Toney and Callum Wilson, both teams have strikers in excellent form, although Newcastle may turn to Alexander Isak in that role due to his excellent form also.
Neither team concedes many goals which means that it could be tight in the penalty areas. It could come down to a moment or two of magic but a draw could be on the cards too.
