You almost run out of words to describe just how good Brentford have been this season. They have well and truly kicked on from a solid first campaign in the Premier League 12 months ago.

Thomas Frank has assembled a strong squad and, with plenty of organisational skill and individual ability, they have occupied a top-half spot virtually for the entire season so far.

Although you would expect Liverpool and Chelsea, both currently below them in the table, to improve as the season goes on, you wouldn’t be surprised if the Bees claimed a European spot at the end of the campaign.

As for Southampton, you wonder if they have what it takes to clamber their way out of their current mess. The situation is dire and they may find themselves marooned if they don’t start picking up points.

Nathan Jones is a fine young manager, although you doubt he has the players at his disposal to mount a comeback.

Brentford FC Preview

Reasons to be cheerful:

Beat Southampton in their first meeting this season

Have gone eight league games without defeat

Reasons to be fearful:

Failed to register a shot on target recently against Leeds

Southampton will be desperate for points

Brentford have the opportunity to go as high as 6th with victory here, although that will depend on how Fulham and Brighton fare in their respective games.

No team plays fewer games in the month of February than Brentford, with the Bees only in action three times. It means their players should be fit and fresh at the busiest time of the season for other clubs.

It has been their energy and quality that has seen them go unbeaten in the league since 23rd October, a run of eight games. They’ve taken 14 points from the last 18 available, although Liverpool and Chelsea are breathing down their necks.

At some point, Brentford may have to face the possibility of losing Ivan Toney to a ban for suspicious betting activity. While they have him, they must continue to push forward.

Here, they have the opportunity to beat Southampton home and away for the first time since 1959.

Star Man – Ivan Toney

Toney has scored eight times in his last eight home appearances, proving his worth to the team. Their opponents could sure use a player of his calibre upfront.

Southampton FC Preview

Reasons to be cheerful

Won two of their last three away games in all competitions

Gave Newcastle a good game in midweek Carabao Cup fixture

Reasons to be fearful

Kept just one clean sheet this season

Conceded over two goals per game on average over previous 26 league games

Things are starting to get a bit desperate for Southampton right now. The arrival of new manager Nathan Jones hasn’t quite had the desired effect as of yet and they remain bottom of the table.

They have tough games coming up, including fellow strugglers Wolves and Leeds as well as Chelsea during February.

The Saints have at least made their move in the January transfer window, splashing out upwards of £60m to improve their options going forward.

Paul Onuachu is the top scorer in Belgium this season while Kamaldeen Sulemana has arrived for a club record £22m. Both may have to wait to make their debut as work permits are yet to be received.

Star Man – James Ward-Prowse

Southampton desperately need their new recruits on the pitch, although Ward-Prowse has given his all for his club this season.

Brentford are always exceptional at home

Could be a comfortable win if the Bees score early

Saints face a struggle to score

Brentford are usually so good at home, it’s difficult to see how Southampton can claim the points they so desperately need.

The Bees should be the fresher of the two teams, with the Saints playing in midweek, and we know how good the home team are when they play with plenty of energy and purpose.

Southampton must keep things tight at the back and hope for a point, but it’s unlikely to come their way.
