Brentford and West Ham serve up a London derby with plenty of pride at stake
Brentford to win 2-0
Tournament: Premier League 2022-2023 | Venue: Brentford, Brentford Community Stadium
Bet NowThis is one of the few games that don’t have too much riding on it this weekend, apart from the pride of the two teams of course.
Brentford have taken their foot off the gas of late, certainly when compared to some of the form earlier in the season. They had a fantastic run of 12 games without defeat, though that resilience has deserted them somewhat.
The Bees remain largely excellent at their home ground and they’ll be determined to ensure that they finish this season in the top half.
West Ham took great strides towards Premier League survival last weekend, when they beat Manchester United to claim three important points.
It takes them to 37 points, five clear of the bottom three. It’s likely to be enough with three games remaining, although they are in the middle of an important European Semi-Final tie which could distract them here.
Reasons to be cheerful:
Won all three meetings against West Ham in the Premier League
Lost just twice at home this season
Reasons to be fearful:
Won only four of their 17 London derbies this season
Could be overtaken by Fulham if they lose here
Despite Brentford’s drop in form of late, losing five of their last 11 in the league, there can be no question that they are a daunting prospect for most opponents at home.
The Gtech Community Stadium has been something of a fortress for the Bees this season, with only Arsenal and Newcastle getting the better of Thomas Frank’s men on their own turf.
On the negative side, Brentford haven’t fared particularly well against teams from their own city, winning four, losing five and drawing eight.
With their opponents playing two games in Europe other side of this fixture, the Bees should see this as a great opportunity to put three points on the board.
Star Man – Ivan Toney
Toney has alternated between scoring once and not scoring in each of his last 15 games. He failed to score in his last game against Liverpool, so perhaps he’s due one here?
Reasons to be cheerful
Great win over Manchester United last weekend
37 points with three games to go should be enough for survival
Reasons to be fearful
Just one win from six games after playing in Europe
Could lose their 12th away game of the season – a joint-club record
West Ham have done just about enough under David Moyes to secure their future in the Premier League next season.
They have toiled at times and their squad is better than a 15th placed finish, if that is where they do end up at the end of the campaign.
In truth, a long European run has hampered their league form, although they have the opportunity to get through to a Final if they avoid defeat next Thursday.
That game may distract the Hammers here, and they will probably need to rotate players to ensure legs remain fresh. It could mean that they aren’t at their best here, although Moyes will expect maximum effort from his players regardless.
Star Man – Said Benrahma
His scuffed shot against United was enough to win the game, and he followed it up with a well-taken penalty in Europe. He plays well in fits and starts, but can be the difference for West Ham when at his best.
Brentford always go up a level at home
Toney to score or assist
West Ham to be short of energy
Brentford’s chances of finishing in a European position have probably gone this season, but Thomas Frank will still want his side to be competitive.
That’s especially true at home, where they have such a great record.
West Ham’s attentions are elsewhere, having secured 37 points already, and could be a little flat here.
