BRIGHTON & HOVE ALBION vs CRYSTAL PALACE Match Preview & Analysis

Brighton have the opportunity to go ahead of their historic rivals in the M23 derby this weekend, having started 2021 in strong form.

With league six games undefeated, The Seagulls have pulled together an impressive string of results which has seen them stay ahead of the chasing teams from the bottom three.

Four points is the gap, and while that will not be enough if their form turns sour, it’s a base that they can build from. Finding the back of the net with increased regularity remains the key area of improvement needed for this Brighton side, who drew 0-0 with Aston Villa last weekend, despite dominating.

Crystal Palace’s slump in form has seen them lose their last two matches, both of which have been without the injured Wilf Zaha.

They must step up their performances without him, as they could very quickly be dragged into a relegation battle if this slump continues further.

Teams Preview

Brighton & Hove Albion Preview

Form Guide (all comps): WWDLD

Reasons to be cheerful:

No defeats in six league games is a big improvement for this team

Wins over Liverpool and Tottenham will keep them believing

Reasons to be fearful:

Remain just four points ahead of relegation

Have only scored maximum one goal per game from last seven fixtures

With Brighton enjoying the better form of the two sides at the start of the year, they will be keen to capitalise upon that and put another three points on the board.

They will know just how poor Palace’s record is without Zaha and will surely go for the throat early on.

There remains a question mark over the ability of Neal Maupay to lead the line for this team, having gone over a month without a goal for the second time this season. Danny Welbeck could be given a start in his place.

Other than that, this Brighton side know each other well, play good football and are tough to beat at the moment. Their recent wins over Liverpool and Spurs show just how much quality their squad possesses, but will want the safety buffer of three additional points here.

Star Man – Leandro Trossard

Is often at the heart of everything positive about Brighton going forward. He’ll be disappointed that his teammates failed to take the chances he created last weekend.

Crystal Palace Preview

Form Guide (all comps): LWWLL

Reasons to be cheerful:

Earned a point against Brighton earlier in the season

A seven-point gap to relegation gives them confidence

Reasons to be fearful:

Just can’t seem to get a result without the injured Zaha

Brighton are one of the form teams at the start of 2021

How is it possible for a team to rely on one player quite as much as Crystal Palace do with Wilf Zaha?

Having lost 18 of the last 20 games in which Zaha has been unavailable to them, as well as going 16 of those without scoring a goal, proves that Palace are far more a one-man team than they would like to admit.

Here, they must find a way to change this disastrous statistic – should they lose their third game on the bounce against Brighton, not to mention their fifth from the last seven, they’ll be left looking over their shoulders at the bottom three.

With Zaha out, new signing Mateta could return to the team, while Townsend and McCarthy could also earn a place in the side.

Star Man – Eberechi Eze

Is now one of the few players in the side who can create a goal in the absence of Zaha

BRIGHTON & HOVE ALBION vs CRYSTAL PALACE Winning Prediction

Brighton are favourites here in light of Palace’s poor form

Can The Eagles cope without Zaha?

Are Brighton able to convert one of their chances?

Scoring goals has been problematic for both of these sides, especially for Palace without their star player of late.

Both Palace and Brighton are looking over their shoulders at teams below them catching them up, so a win here would be most welcome.

It’s Brighton that are most likely, however, should they be able to take their chances this time.
