High-flyers Brighton and Leeds meet in North vs. South clash
Brighton 1-1 Leeds
Tournament: Premier League 2022-2023 | Venue: Brighton and Hove, Amex StadiumBet Now
Brighton and Leeds have been two of the surprise packages so far this season, gathering seven points apiece and sitting near the top end of the Premier League.
They each have one giant win each, that is against a Big Six team. Brighton beat Manchester United 2-1 on the opening day of the season, while Leeds battered Chelsea 3-0 last weekend.
Indeed, it is that extra goal difference that has propelled Leeds two places higher in the table, with both teams earning seven points from a possible nine.
Both are capable of scoring goals, both play decent football and it’ll be interesting to see who comes out on top here.
Brighton are so good at home, but what effect will that win over Chelsea have for Leeds?
Reasons to be cheerful:
5th place is the highest they’ve been in the Premier League after three games
Five home games unbeaten in a row
Reasons to be fearful:
Leeds’ pace upfront could concern them
Failed to beat Leeds in two games last season
Brighton have managed to turn their home ground into a fortress over the past season or so, with no opponents looking forward to playing there.
They haven’t lost at the Amex Stadium since 16th March, in a 2-0 defeat to Tottenham. Since then, they’ve treated their fans to some good football and some positive results to match.
Should they claim victory here, they’ll go as high as joint-second, albeit temporarily, as top side Arsenal play later in the day.
Graham Potter’s side will be leaving nothing to chance, however. He knows that games against Leeds aren’t easily, especially as they were held to two draws against them last season.
They haven’t lost to Leeds since their opponents gained promotion to the Premier League, however, claiming two victories in that timeframe.
Star Man – Danny Welbeck
His place may be under threat from new signing Undav, and Welbeck doesn’t score as many goals as other strikers, but you can never question his work rate. His runs help his teammates so much.
Reasons to be cheerful
Sensational win over Chelsea was their best since returning to Premier League
Young new signings have gelled immediately
Reasons to be fearful
Poor record against Brighton
Have played more recently than their opponents
Leeds produced the very best performance we’ve seen from them since they returned to the Premier League last weekend.
Very few expected Leeds to beat Chelsea in the first place, let alone the way they did. They took Chelsea apart from start to finish, and could well have scored more than three goals.
It was a performance you would not have seen under previous manager Bielsa. Leeds were exciting to watch under the Argentine, but rarely would be as good across the pitch and in defence.
Here, they must break their poor run of form against Brighton, who they haven’t beaten since they returned to the Premier League. We know how difficult it is to face them at the Amex Stadium, too.
Their players will need to be in a similar form to last weekend to get a result.
Star Man – Jack Harrison
Scored and assisted against Chelsea last weekend and put in a battling performance. His assist means he’s contributed in that respect in all three matches so far this season.
Should be action at both ends
Brighton’s home support always puts opponents under pressure
Possession shared evenly
Leeds have proved that there is, indeed, life after selling their two best players over the summer. Phillips and Raphinha have departed for Manchester City and Barcelona, respectively.
In the meantime, the likes of Rodrigo, Harrison and Aaronson have stepped up to the plate.
They won’t hold onto to third position forever, but they’re playing great football right now.
Brighton always seem to play well at home and it’ll be interesting to see how both teams cope with each other’s high-pressing tactics.
It’ll be an engaging watch, with either side capable of victory, but could also finish as a draw.
