Brighton and Newcastle clash looking to make it two wins from two
Brighton to win 2-1
Tournament: Premier League 2022-2023 | Venue: Brighton and Hove, Amex Stadium
Bet NowFew would have predicted the result that saw Brighton beat Manchester United last weekend.
At half time, the Seagulls were 2-0 to the good, and had shown their opponents the benefits of strong coaching over a number of years.
Graham Potter’s men are well-drilled, talented, and organised and will be looking to improve on their best-ever finish last season of 9th. It’s a hard ask, considering the teams above them, but they have a good shout.
Newcastle were also victorious in their opening weekend, with two second-half goals seeing off newly promoted Nottingham Forest.
Big things are expected of them this season, considering the investment made into the club by their Saudi backers.
The Amex Stadium always has a great atmosphere on the English south coast, and this should be a fine game of football.
Reasons to be cheerful:
Team looks beautifully balanced
One defeat in 10 against Newcastle
Reasons to be fearful:
Newcastle are a different beast under Eddie Howe
Still look a striker short of a top team
Graham Potter continues to work wonders at Brighton, propelling them to a 9th place finish last season. Privately, he will expect even more from his players this term.
A win against Manchester United, at Old Trafford, doesn’t get much better and that will give his players the world of confidence to go into this game and seek another three points.
Their record is good against Newcastle, winning four and losing just one of their last 10 meetings. However, under Eddie Howe, Newcastle are a different proposition. Like Brighton, they are well-drilled and hard to beat nowadays.
Nevertheless, Brighton will be confident of securing another win here. The first home game of the season should provide enough motivation, if they needed any.
Star Man – Moisés Caicedo
The Ecuadorian simply ran the show against Manchester United from midfield. He has a great mixture of power, pace and technique.
Reasons to be cheerful
2-0 victory over Forest was perfect way to start campaign
Win ratio under Howe is good
Reasons to be fearful
Brighton are notoriously difficult to play against
Attacking reinforcements are still required
Newcastle’s fortunes improved dramatically under the management of Eddie Howe at the end of last season.
They finished in 11th place, when for much of the campaign they were in a relegation battle. Like Brighton, they will be seeking a top-half finish this time around.
Indeed, it may well be the two of them fighting it out for the same positions.
It’s clear that Newcastle need attacking options in order to do that, however. Callum Wilson is a talented striker, but is prone to injury. The backup options are not necessarily top-half standard.
Where improvements have been made is at the back. The signings of Pope in goal and Botman at the back should help them concede fewer goals this season.
Star Man – Bruno Guimaraes
This talented attacking midfielder is consistently showing why Newcastle spent £40m on him. He was the star against Forest and will continue to thrive in this team.
Plenty of good football on offer
Both sides to score
Brighton’s home advantage to pay off
Only four of the 10 games were won by the home side last weekend, a surprising statistic.
However, Brighton’s home advantage should pay off for them this weekend. Their fans are always in good voice, and their team respond by playing good football.
Newcastle have the makings of a very good team, but need more time under Eddie Howe’s management to get to the level of their opponents here.
It should be a good watch, regardless.
