BURNLEY FC vs NEWCASTLE UNITED Match Preview & Analysis

A win would be absolutely massive for both of these clubs, giving them both the points and the confidence to cling on to Premier League survival this season.

Burnley have a little more breathing space than their opponents, sitting a couple of places and four points higher than Newcastle. They’ve only scored 24 goals all season (only Sheffield United have fewer), and have found wins hard to come by, but they have always appeared solid.

They have a solitary win from their last seven league games, and while they appear safe enough with a seven point gap, earning something here would help greatly.

Newcastle are in more need of something, for sure. Although Fulham have lost their match earlier this weekend, Newcastle remain just three points ahead, albeit with two games in hand.

Should they earn the points here, it could make a world of difference to them.

Teams Preview

Burnley FC Preview

Form Guide (all comps): LDDWL

Reasons to be cheerful:

Bardsley and Pieters return to the side after absence

Have gone unbeaten in last five home games

Reasons to be fearful:

Just one win from seven games

Could be dragged into danger with defeat

A victory for Burnley here would practically see them safe this season. A 10 point gap over Fulham in 18th should be more than enough, especially as the London side aren’t picking up too many right now.

It’s certainly not been plain sailing by any means this season, with multiple injuries to key players in both attack and defence, as well as finding goals even harder to come by than in previous seasons.

They’ve managed to pick up points consistently enough however, with their last five home games all bringing draws.

The Clarets will welcome back two stalwart defenders here, with Phil Bardsley and Erik Pieters available for selection once again following spells on the sideline.

Star Man – Chris Wood

Could score in four successive league appearances for Burnley.

Newcastle United Preview

Form Guide (all comps): DDDLD

Reasons to be cheerful:

Lost just one of their last five games

Have three points and two games in hand over Fulham

Reasons to be fearful:

     Winless in seven league fixtures

Their 2021 tally of 10 league points is a joint-low with Southampton

As bad as Newcastle have been this season, they’ve just about managed to keep their heads above water recently.

A month or so ago, Fulham appeared as though they would overtake the Magpies, though this has not happened, and Newcastle’s position has actually strengthened in recent weeks.

After Fulham’s loss earlier in the weekend, Newcastle now have two games in hand over their relegation rivals, as well as a three-point buffer to lean on. If they can get something out of this match, it’ll really boost their confidence.

Much welcomed news for the Magpies is the return of top scorer Callum Wilson, who has been out injured since the start of February.

Newcastle know that Burnley will be tough to beat, but there is a huge incentive on offer should they do so.

Star Man – Callum Wilson

Newcastle have badly missed their top scorer, having not won a game since he became injured.

BURNLEY FC vs NEWCASTLE UNITED Winning Prediction

     A tight match to call

Newcastle are poor going forward and Burnley solid at the back

     Possession evenly shared

Neither side has been great at putting the ball in the back of the net this season. They only reason that Burnley are ahead of Newcastle in the table is down to their determined defending and top organisation.

Burnley won’t want to get beaten here, and risk being drawn into a messy relegation scrap, while Newcastle may also take a point to increase the gap between themselves and Fulham.
