Both Burnley and West Brom have spent a large portion of the season in or around the bottom three spots, but now face very different possibilities for the remainder of the campaign.

For Burnley, they have the chance to capitalise on some good form of late, winning once and drawing two of their last five games, putting themselves in 15th position and eight points ahead of Fulham in 18th.

Their win over Crystal Palace the other week was huge, not only for their 3-0 scoreline, but also the way in which it dealt a hammer blow to the sides looking to close the gap on them.

As for West Brom, they’ve enjoyed a positive result this week by earning a draw against Manchester United, though it’s one which still leaves them 12 points adrift of safety.

Just two wins all campaign, not to mention the highest number of goals conceded, has placed the Baggies surely out of reach of survival this season.

Here, they must play as though they’re footballing lives depended on it, which it may well do, and call upon their good performance against Manchester United as inspiration.

Burnley FC Preview

Form Guide (all comps): WDLWD

Reasons to be cheerful:

Boosted by the return of captain Ben Mee

Have put an eight-point gap between themselves and relegation

Reasons to be fearful:

The likes of Gudmundsson, Brady and Wood could all be unavailable

West Brom are in dire need of points

You know exactly what you’re going to get from this Burnley side – they’re rarely very good or very bad, but always extremely difficult to play against.

They’ll have their tails up right now having secured five points from their last three games with their only defeats so far in 2021 coming against sides in the top four currently.

Unfortunately, for this game they will have to manage without several players, one of which in Gudmundsson who has scored two in his last three to help Burnley into an eight-point lead over the relegation sides.

The likes of Robbie Brady and Chris Wood, two who have popped up with goals this season as well, are likely to be missing.

That said, they way in which they play could be too much for a desperate West Brom team this weekend.

Star Man – Ben Mee

Unlikely to score from centre back, but is a wise leader for this Burnley side. He and Tarkowski have played a huge part in shoring up the Clarets’ defence this season.

West Bromwich Albion FC Preview

Form Guide (all comps): LDLLD

Reasons to be cheerful:

Draw against Manchester United shows there is still fight within the squad

Signings Diagne and Maitland-Niles have injected quality up front

Reasons to be fearful:

12 points behind with 14 games remaining is surely unlikely now

Burnley have only lost one of their last five games against a bottom half team

West Brom’s chances of survival look no better now than they did this time last week, despite earning a much-deserved point against Manchester United in their last game.

They remain 12 points off the pace and with the likes of Burnley and Brighton all picking up points with superior frequency, it’s unlikely they can catch them up.

Positively, it seems as though they have recruited smartly in the recent transfer window. Mbaye Diagne was a real thorn in Manchester United’s side last weekend, while Ainsley Maitland-Niles has bags of quality. It’s just a shame that it could be too little, too late for the Baggies.

Star Man – Mbaye Diagne

Was a real handful against United, scoring one and missing several others which could have won the game. If they can feed him chances, he’ll score goals.

A tight game with neither wanting to lose

Diagne to get on the scoresheet again

Burnley slight favourites based on form

Every game is must-win for West Brom now. If they were to draw their remaining 14 matches, that would leave them with 27 points, the same number as Burnley are on now and that’s without other teams picking up points in the meantime.

Burnley are going to be tough to beat, of course, and will play with the confidence that comes from a good run of form. It makes them slight favourites here.

Burnley to win 2-1
