BURNLEY FC vs WEST HAM UNITED FC Match Preview & Analysis

West Ham’s quest to finish in the top four of the Premier League has faltered somewhat over the past couple of weeks, losing to both Newcastle and West Ham and allowing Chelsea to build up a six-point lead in 4th.

They’ve missed two of their key players, ruled out for the remainder of the season, in Declan Rice and Michail Antonio, and they’ve struggled to have the same presence on the pitch as in previous weeks.

With five games remaining, the Hammers are on a knife edge – should they win, they’ll be right in the thick of it once more. Should they lose, however, you can see the teams below them catching them up with all West Ham’s hard work going to waste.

Burnley surprised one or two people last weekend by putting four goals past Wolves. It was their biggest win in the top division since 1965, with Chris Wood scoring a rare hattrick.

Could we see some goals here?

Teams Preview

Burnley FC Preview

Form Guide (all comps): WLLLW

Reasons to be cheerful:

Great result last weekend moved them nine points from danger

Beat West Ham at home in the last two seasons

Reasons to be fearful:

Haven’t won their last seven at home

Lost to West Ham earlier in the season

Burnley were highly unlikely to be relegated, however they’ll be pleased with the three points they picked up last weekend over Wolves.

They’ve built up a nine-point gap between themselves and 18th place Fulham, and have a game in hand over the London side too.

Their home form will be a worry of course – Burnley haven’t gone eight games without a win at Turf Moor since 1981 – and they’ll be determined to put that right here, especially with a good record against West Ham at home over recent seasons.

Despite this, you could argue that this game isn’t quite as important to them as it is to their opponents, who have top four positions to fight for.

Star Man – Chris Wood

Scored his first hattrick for the club last weekend, and will be looking to continue his excellent form here.

West Ham United FC Preview

Form Guide (all comps): DWWLL

Reasons to be cheerful:

A win here can restart their top four push

Only play one top half team until the end of the season

Reasons to be fearful:

Key missing players have taken their toll recently

Just one away win from last five

West Ham were always outside favourites to claim 4th place, even when they occupied that spot not so long ago.

There was always the feeling that one of Chelsea, Liverpool or Tottenham would kick into gear and overtake them, which has come to fruition in recent weeks. Chelsea appear too strong to knock off that perch right now, though West Ham will want to win here to keep them honest.

The Hammers have lost back-to-back games for the first time since September and are clearly feeling the loss of the injured duo Declan Rice and Michail Antonio.

Chelsea outplayed West Ham last weekend, however Burnley are unlikely to present as tough a challenge as the London side.

Star Man – Jesse Lingard

Represents West Ham’s best attacking threat right now and is already their top scorer despite playing only 11 times for them since joining on loan.

BURNLEY FC vs WEST HAM UNITED FC Winning Prediction

West Ham should come quickly out of the blocks

Burnley’s confidence will be high after last week

Should be chances at both ends

You feel that West Ham must win here to keep alive their goal of a top four finish, while Burnley’s survival in the Premier League is likely secured regardless of the result.

Despite that, the home side will not go down without a fight and are sure to create chances of their own.

This should be an interesting game.
