Chennaiyin and Punjab take on each other in a battle between two clubs who have struggled at the start of the 2023-24 season. Chennaiyin have only picked up three points from the first four games whereas Punjab are still waiting for the first win of the season.
In the past, these two teams have met each other only twice in the Asian AFC Cup. Both meetings have not produced a winner. This coupled with the poor start for the two teams have dampened expectations for this game.
Reasons to be cheerful
• Recent win over Hyderabad
• Clean sheet against Hyderabad
Reasons to be fearful
• Home record does not seem to be any better compared to last season
• Defensive organisation is still all over the place
Chennaiyin could not have made a worse start to the season after losing three straight matches. However, coach Owen Coyle was finally able to see his team get the first win out of the way. A victory over similarly struggling Hyderabad can be massive on several fronts.
The key objective for Coyle and his team will be to build on this victory. A win in the upcoming game could lift Chennaiyin to as high as sixth in the table. Chennaiyin have no injury concerns in the squad and this should mean an unchanged line-up from the 57-year-old.
Star man – Connor Shields
Connor Shields is the most valuable player in the Chennaiyin squad. The 26-year-old came up with five goals in his previous campaign in the Scottish Championship with the Queen’s Park. Since the move to the Indian Super League in the summer, Shields will be delighted to have grabbed his first goal.
Reasons to be cheerful
• Avoid a defeat in the last two matches
• Conceded just one goal in the last two games
Reasons to be fearful
• Still waiting for the first win of the season
• Inability to create chances or take the few which come their way
Punjab struggled to create many opportunities in the goalless draw with Jamshedpur and it has been a difficult start to the season. The team may have to undergo serious improvements in the offensive areas of the pitch to start picking up points and victories.
Punjab also have a difficult run of games coming up with four out of the next five matches away from home. Coach Staikos Vergetis was always aware that the season was going to be tough after having just picked up promotion from the I-League.
On the positive side, Punjab have conceded less than 1.5 goals per match in the last three encounters.
Star man – Luka Majcen
Luka Majcen had a couple of half chances in the match against Jamshedpur. However, the 34-year-old Slovenian was unable to take the opportunities that came his way. The forward was able to score 16 goals in 20 appearances for Punjab in the I-League. Even though he is off the mark for the campaign with one goal in his first four games, he can be expected to improve going forward.
Chennaiyin did relatively well to pick up a crucial victory over Hyderabad. Apart from helping the club pick up the first victory of the campaign, it has also given Chennaiyin a huge morale boost following the first clean sheet.
The upcoming match against Punjab is also likely to be a low-scoring encounter given that Staikos Vergetis’ team have not been great when it comes to creating chances. Punjab are also coming on the back of the first clean sheet this season. The two teams may end up sharing the points in a difficult encounter at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Chennai.
