Chelsea return to Stamford Bridge to face Crystal Palace in round three, buoyed by their 6-2 away win against Wolverhampton. Meanwhile, Crystal Palace will enter the game low on confidence after succumbing to their second successive defeat of the season last week, losing 0-2 at home to West Ham.

They may be full of confidence following the Wolves game, but the Blues have experienced a blow this week, losing 1-2 to the Swiss club Sarvatte at Stamford Bridge in the Europa League Playoffs. However, they still won the fixture with an aggregate score of 3-2.

As things stand following the completion of the first round of matches, Chelsea is presently eighth in the points table with a victory and a loss, while Crystal Palace is 17th with two defeats. Come Saturday, the Blues will be looking to build on their momentum, while Palace will be looking to re-establish their status in the competition.

Chelsea FC Preview

The Blues’ fans couldn't have asked for a better response to the home defeat than an absolute mauling of its opposition in an away game by a margin of 6-2. Noni Madueke with a hat-trick inside fourteen minutes of play in the second half and Cole ‘Cold’ Palmer with an icy finish for the second goal and three assists were the stars of the match. The fact that Chelsea only had an xGA of 1.68 speaks volumes of the finishing that we witnessed in the contest.

Following the loss to City in the first match, Enzo Maresca made tactical changes to his lineup for the Wolves match. He re-established Palmer as a number 10 and moved Enzo Fernandez to a much deeper role in the midfield. That meant someone Madueke had a free run on the flanks as the Wolves defenders were busy tackling Palmer. However, some issues also emerged from the game.

As we saw against City, Enzo and Blues' £100 million signing once again delivered a poor performance in the middle. The duo were frequently dispossessed, and Caicedo's blunder resulted in one of Wolves' two goals.

Furthermore, Mykhaylo Mudryk, who started in place of Nkunku, appeared to be more of an accessory than an essential component of the team. At the end of the day, he had just 13 touches and no shots on goal. Meanwhile, Neto, who came on as a substitute, made 30 touches and assisted on one goal.

As a result of some players' troubles on the pitch, we could see Nkunku/Neto and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall start the next match.

Chelsea Starting Lineup -  Sanchez (Goalkeeper); Cucurella, Colwill, Badiashile, Gusto (Defenders); Fernandez, Palmer, Dewsbury Hall (Midfielders); Nkunku Jackson, Noni Madueke (Forwards)

Crystal Palace Preview

In contrast to their opponents, the Eagles had another miserable week to forget. Despite having 58% possession, they lost their second straight game of the season to West Ham (2-0). After the first round of fixtures, the Eagles conceded four while scoring only once. They had chances against 'the Hammers' but couldn't convert them into goals; two in the first half, Sarr missed a close range shot later on, and Eberechi Eze hit the post.

Crystal Palace's revival last season was partly due to the effectiveness of their front three of Matata, Eze, and Olise. The trio combined for 36 of the Eagles' 57 goals last season. Unfortunately for Glasner, he no longer has Olise, and Mateta has been out of form, with only one shot in two games. So it's up to Eze to give creative energy up front, but time will tell how effective he is without Olise.

Glasner prefers to play in a 3-4-2-1 formation, which allows his team to switch to a 5-4-1 formation when they need to defend against Palmer and Noni Madueke. In that circumstance, Chadi Riad and Tyrick Mitchell will need to work together to avoid what happened to Ait-Nouri against Chelsea.

Crystal Palace Starting Lineup -  Henderson (Goalkeeper); Richards, Guehi, Munoz, Riad, Munoz(Defenders); Wharton, Lerma, Mitchell (Midfielders) ;Kamada, Eze, Mateta (Forwards)

Chelsea versus Crystal Palace is arguably one of the most lopsided rivalries in the Premier League. In all 30 matches played between the teams, Chelsea has won 24 games while losing only four. Since 2017, the Blues haven't lost a game against the Eagles. In the prior season, they won both their games by a margin, 3-1 and 2-1. In total, the Blues’ have won 14 games on the trot.

Despite that 6-2 win, Chelsea weren't at their best as a combination, but it could be when they face Crystal Palace on Sunday. We expect yet another dominant win from the Blues.
