Chelsea wasted little time in giving Graham Potter the sack this weekend, showing their manager the door after yet another disappointing defeat.

Their 2-0 humbling at home to Aston Villa was clearly the final straw for Todd Boehly and Chelsea’s ownership team. It was a result that leaves them planted in the bottom half of the league and with little hope of improvement.

While they remain in the Champions League, they would need to win that competition to play any part in Europe next season, it would seem.

Liverpool are faring only slightly better than their opponents, with Jurgen Klopp’s men at least in with a shout of a top four finish.

Jurgen Klopp’s men have lost two games in a row, however, with this weekend’s defeat to Manchester City demonstrating the gap that now exists between the two giants of English football.

A win here would be crucial for either team.

Chelsea FC Preview

Reasons to be cheerful:

A change of management will shake things up

Having Kante back in midfield will help team structure

Reasons to be fearful:

Team spirit will be shattered after latest set of results

One win from their last eight meetings with Liverpool

The appointment of Graham Potter was meant to signal a new era for Chelsea Football Club, one that differed from the hire and fire mentally of the previous ownership model.

Seven months later and Potter finds himself a victim of the sack just as much as his predecessors. The club will now look to appoint a new manager, although Bruno Saltor will take charge in the interim.

As with most managerial changes, Chelsea’s players may feel a boost from having a fresh set of ideas and expectations on their shoulders – they certainly need to up their performance with Liverpool in town.

While team spirit will be shattered after the latest round of results, they must find a way to recover quickly. With Ngolo Kante back from long-term injury, he could help galvanise their midfield.

They must find a way of scoring more frequently – they had 27 shots against Aston Villa without finding the back of the net.

Star Man – Kai Havertz

So much attention will be on Chelsea’s attackers with the club floating helplessly in midtable. A top striker would have finished one or two chances that they created against Villa and Havertz needs to step up.

Liverpool FC Preview

Reasons to be cheerful

     Great recent record against Chelsea

Played well in the first half against City

Reasons to be fearful

Lost their last three games in all competitions scoring just once

Tough upcoming fixture list for the Reds

Liverpool’s problems have been somewhat overshadowed by Chelsea this week, although that doesn’t change the worsening situation at Anfield right now.

After their thumping 7-0 win over Manchester United, Liverpool have lost their next three games in all competitions, conceding six and scoring just one.

The Reds started their contest against Manchester City in fine fashion, opening the scoring and looking dangerous. Like many games this season, however, they couldn’t keep up the pace and fell away.

Here, they will look to take advantage of a Chelsea team in turmoil, in between managers and rock bottom on confidence.

You would expect them to go for the throats here, especially with their positive record over the Blues in recent years.

Star Man – Mo Salah

The one consistency for Liverpool this year has been Salah’s goalscoring record. With 23 goals and 11 assists, Salah remains Liverpool’s best asset.

Both teams more comfortable with the ball than without

     Can either side find confidence?

Salah could be the difference again

Both Chelsea and Liverpool are in a fragile state right now, although the home side are in a period of trouble that isn’t easily fixed.

Liverpool aren’t in the best form, but they have the players that have won them trophies before and can turn it on if they click into gear.

While a change of leadership could help Chelsea, Liverpool will feel that they are there for the taking here.
