Chelsea aim to continue unbeaten start under new manager while Newcastle have slipped into survival battle
Chelsea to win 2-0
Tournament: Premier League 2020-2021 | Venue: London, Stamford Bridge
One thing which Thomas Tuchel has brought to Chelsea is an increased solidarity in recent weeks. Already five games into his reign at Stamford Bridge, with four wins and a draw coming during that period, with just the one goal conceded.
They now have the sights set once again on a top four position, with clubs such as Liverpool slipping up once again. Indeed, the Blues could overtake the Reds with a win here.
Here, they look to continue a formidable record against a Newcastle side who are one of the worst teams in the league on current form and have slumped to 17th position, although have a 10 point buffer on the relegation zone.
The Magpies have lost five of their last seven matches and, although two wins have come recently against Everton and Southampton, they’ll be under no illusions that this has been a terrible season for a club of its size.
Form Guide (all comps): DWWWW
Reasons to be cheerful:
Are a far more resilient unit under Tuchel
Looking for their fourth cleansheet from last five
Reasons to be fearful:
Goals are not flowing quite as easily lately
Timo Werner is yet to break his goal drought
Chelsea can once more creep into the top four with a win over Newcastle after appearing out of the race at one stage under previous manager Frank Lampard.
Thomas Tuchel has brought a stability and defence resilience to Chelsea since joining the club, with just one goal being conceded during that period.
On the flip side, three of the four wins have only been by a single goal margin, proving that scoring goals is a little tougher than may be expected with the embarrassment of riches The Blues have at their disposal.
Timo Werner has now gone 14 league games without a goal, a shocking amount of time for a £45m striker. That said, he has three assists from his last two games to help his side to victory.
Here, they will need to be patient as Newcastle United will aim to be tricky to break down.
Star Man – Mason Mount
Is looking like he’ll be one of Thomas Tuchel’s most important players going forward, and scored in their recent league win over Sheffield United.
Form Guide (all comps): LLWLW
Reasons to be cheerful:
Two wins recently has helped ease huge pressure on manager’s shoulders
Have had over a week’s rest since their last game
Reasons to be fearful:
Star striker Callum Wilson out for up to two months
Almiron is the only fit player to score more than one goal this season
Just when you thought Newcastle’s season could not get much worse, their best player Callum Wilson gets himself injured for six to eight weeks.
Wilson, who has scored 40% of all Newcastle’s goals this season, will leave a huge gap in The Magpie’s forward areas. With Jeff Hendrick also suspended, Almiron is now the only Magpies player available to have scored more than a single goal all season.
They have slumped to 17th position, courtesy of strong form from the likes of Brighton and Burnley of late. While the buffer to relegation is 10 points currently, they will not want this gap to close further.
Against Chelsea, they will not want their abysmal record of seven straight defeats at Stamford Bridge to continue.
Star Man – Almiron
Scored twice in the win over Southampton last weekend. He now has five goals for the season.
Chelsea will dominate possession here
The likes of Mount and Pulisic will create plenty of chances
Can Newcastle cope without Wilson up front?
If Newcastle would have found it difficult to score against Chelsea with a fully fit side, imagine how tough it’ll be without their best player.
Against Chelsea, they will just have to be compact and see if they can break quickly.
The Blues are certainly heavy favourites.
