Chelsea and Tottenham meet in the first giant clash of the season
Chelsea 2-2 Tottenham
Tournament: Premier League 2022-2023 | Venue: London, Stamford Bridge
Bet NowThe first clash of the season between two Big Six clubs is always a standout, especially when it’s also a London derby.
Chelsea and Spurs need no introductions to each other, although it’s usually the former with the upper hand in these contests. Indeed, Chelsea beat Spurs on four occasions last season, putting down a marker in England’s capital.
There is a change in the wind this season, however.
Spurs are expected to challenge for big things under Antonio Conte, now that he’s had a summer to drill his ideas into the squad, and the club has made some sensible acquisitions in the transfer market.
Both teams won their opening games of the season, although it was Tottenham who were the more convincing, smashing four past Southampton.
These meetings are often a classic, so we should be entertained for sure.
Reasons to be cheerful:
Great record over Spurs
Tuchel’s side can never be written off
Reasons to be fearful:
Striker departures have left them short upfront
New defenders still bedding in
Chelsea entered their first season under new ownership with a win against Everton, although it wasn’t pretty. They were slow and ponderous at times.
They also look short of goals upfront. Although they have made a top signing in Raheem Sterling, from Manchester City, the departures of Lukaku and Werner mean they are lacking strength in depth.
There has been talk of new signings coming in, but they are yet to materialise.
Here, they will still be a strong unit. While new defenders Koulibaly and Cucurella are still in their infancy at the club, they are strong signings over the summer.
They will need to be wary of Spurs’ threat, but they have plenty of quality themselves.
Star Man – Raheem Sterling
The former Manchester City player adds plenty of quality to Chelsea’s line-up and is certain to get goals and assists as the season progresses.
Reasons to be cheerful
Currently top of the table after a brilliant 4-1 win last weekend
They are expected to challenge for trophies under Conte this season
Reasons to be fearful
Dreadful record against Chelsea over the years
Defence hasn’t been strengthened over the summer
Tottenham have one of the worst records against Chelsea in English football, especially at Stamford Bridge.
Spurs have only beaten Chelsea once from their last 37 meetings at Stamford Bridge, including both from last season.
In their favour, Spurs now have a former Chelsea manager on their side. Antonio Conte is regarded as one of the best coaches in the world and has immensely improved his side since taking over.
They looked sensational as they beat Southampton 4-1 last weekend, currently topping the Premier League table.
This will be a tougher occasion, of course.
Chelsea are famously tough to play against under Thomas Tuchel, and they won’t find it easy to create space.
Star Man – Harry Kane
Their iconic centre-forward failed to get on the scoresheet last weekend, but it’s only a matter of time before he does.
An even game of football
Goals at both ends
Kane to get off the mark in front of goal
Games involving these two sides are often full of goals. There were eight in their four meetings last season, all of them scored by Chelsea.
It’s unlikely to be as one-sided here, though. Spurs are a different beast under Conte and are full of confidence right now.
Expected chances, and goals, at both ends.
Either side could pinch it, but a draw could be on the cards here.
