Struggling Chelsea search for better form against London rivals West Ham
Chelsea to win 2-1
Tournament: Premier League 2022-2023 | Venue: London, Stamford BridgeBet Now
Thomas Tuchel hit out at his defensive players in midweek, following their loss to Southampton in which the Saints came from behind to win.
Despite taking the lead, the Blues were sloppy throughout most of the game and ended up paying the penalty for their mistakes.
On transfer deadline day, Chelsea completed the much-awaited signing of defender Wesley Fofana from Leicester, for a fee of £70m. Tuchel will hope that he improves their back line over time.
At home, they will hope to return to winning form after falling behind the pace set at the top of the table.
West Ham have finally picked themselves up off the floor and dug out two positive results in the space of a week. After beating Aston Villa, the Hammers went on to claim a draw at home to Tottenham.
Those results will have boosted their confidence going into their second London derby on the bounce.
Reasons to be cheerful:
Deadline day signings will boost their confidence even if not yet available
Three wins out of their last five meetings with West Ham
Reasons to be fearful:
Defenders are out of form right now
Goalscoring form could do with improvement too
A lot has been made of Chelsea’s inconsistent start to the season, which has consisted of two wins, two defeats and a draw.
While not an ideal start, it’s nothing to worry about just yet for Chelsea fans, who have a fantastic manager in Thomas Tuchel at the helm.
He and his squad will improve as the season progresses, although it does look like they won’t be challenging Manchester City for the title this year.
Their decision to start the season without a proper central striker appears to have been resolved, with the club agreeing terms with former Arsenal forward Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.
Aubameyang has spent the last six months at Barcelona, though has seen his game time reduced after the arrival of Robert Lewandowski. Wesley Fofana has also joined the club in a £70m deal.
Neither will be available for this game, but they will hope to improve on a poor performance against Southampton. A home game against their London rivals West Ham should provide the motivation.
Star Man – Raheem Sterling
Despite Chelsea’s struggles, Sterling has three goals in his last two games. He is a man in form and his teammates will look to him to find a way to goal again here.
Reasons to be cheerful
Four points from the last six available shows a revival of sorts
New signing Lucas Paqueta could transform their midfield
Reasons to be fearful
Record away to Chelsea is poor
Continue to concede more goals than they should
West Ham’s manager David Moyes said that they look “more like themselves” after a victory and a draw in their last two games.
Those four points came against Aston Villa and Tottenham, taking them from bottom of the table to 14th right now.
New signing Lucas Paqueta, brought in for approximately £50m from Lyon, could provide the extra quality they need in the midfield area. Paqueta is skillful and creative, something West Ham have been lacking for a while.
Up front, Moyes doesn’t seem to have a favourite between Antonio and new signing Scamacca, both of which have been rotated this season. One, or both, will need to up their goals tally before long.
Against Chelsea, they will be put under pressure by a team who have been criticised this week. That can work to West Ham’s advantage as they like to play on the counterattack themselves.
Star Man – Lucas Paqueta
The new Brazilian signing made a substitute appearance against Spurs despite not having trained with his teammates. Now, with a few days training under his belt, he should be ready to start against Chelsea.
Chelsea will come out flying
The home side will be determined to score quickly and boost confidence
West Ham have weapons of their own and could cause problems
This could either be a game where Chelsea recover their winning form and push up the table, or drop more points and invite further pressure on themselves.
West Ham have improved from a few weeks ago and will give the Blues a good run for their money here. Lucas Paqueta could be involved from the start and fans will be anxious to see what all the fuss is about.
Chelsea are favourites here, but it won’t be easy for them.
