Chelsea aiming to continue winning start under Potter against managerless Wolves
Chelsea to win 2-0
Tournament: Premier League 2022-2023 | Venue: London, Stamford Bridge
Bet NowThe manager merry-go-round has well and truly started now, with three Premier League bosses already losing their jobs and several more rumoured to be under threat of the sack.
Bruno Lage became the latest casualty when Wolves decided to cut their ties with him. The Portuguese manager has lost four of their eight games this season, winning just one.
The decision came after a poor defeat to West Ham, another club near the foot of the table. It’s unlikely the club will have a new permanent manager in place for this one.
Chelsea are a month or so into the new era under Graham Potter, and the signs are reasonably positive. A draw in their opening Champions League game was followed up by a narrow win over Crystal Palace.
More encouragingly, they secured an impressive 3-0 win over Italian champions AC Milan in midweek.
The Blues are favourites here.
Reasons to be cheerful:
Encouraging signs are there under Graham Potter
Win would likely take them into the top four
Reasons to be fearful:
Haven’t beaten Wolves in last four
Midweek fixtures could impact players’ fitness levels
Chelsea fans will have been pleased with Graham Potter’s start to life at Chelsea, on the whole.
The former Brighton coach has won two of his first three games at the club in all competitions and looks to have implemented his style of play quite quickly.
There were times when Chelsea weren’t at their best against Crystal Palace last weekend, but the way in which they came back to win the game will have pleased the new manager.
As often happens, the players raise their levels to impress a new manager, and it is likely to pay dividends for them this season, especially against struggling teams like Wolves.
In midweek, the Blues really flexed their muscles, dictating the game against the champions of Italy last season. AC Milan had no response to Chelsea’s intensity from the start.
Can they replicate that here? They will be forced to line-up without the injured Wesley Fofana.
Star Man – Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang
He has his doubters, but you cannot deny that he remains a fine goalscorer when in form. He now has two goals in two games since signing for the club.
Reasons to be cheerful
Change of manager could help to motivate the players
Good recent record against Chelsea
Reasons to be fearful
They’ve now slipped into the bottom three after poor run of form
Three goals scored is the lowest in the league
Although Wolves’ start to the season wasn’t the worst, losing three of their eight games, the players looked short of ideas at times.
Their three goals scored is by far the lowest in the league this season. The next lowest is six, shared by Bournemouth, Villa and Leicester.
The new manager’s job, whoever that ends up being, will want to improve that instantly. The addition of Diego Costa to the squad could help, but it will require a marked improvement from the whole team.
Here, they have a good record against Chelsea to call upon, going unbeaten in their last four games, winning one of them. It is unlikely to count for much here, but it could motivate them to lift their game.
Unfortunately, a loss could see them slip another place in the league, if Leicester win their game against Bournemouth.
Star Man – Diego Costa
The powerful, snarling Costa may be the man Wolves need right now to inspire them going forward. He only played 30 minutes against West Ham, but could start the game against his former club here.
Costa to start against his former club?
Wolves must improve going forward
Chelsea’s intensity could stifle their opponents
You wonder what Wolves can achieve this season after sacking their manager?
If they pick the right man to replace him, they could still go on to secure a decent finish in the league. If not, it could spell danger for them.
Against Chelsea, they will probably fear the worst. Potter will set his team up to press high from the start and stifle Wolves with their intensity.
If the Blues score the first goal, they should win comfortably.
