Chelsea once again begin a new era after sacking their most recent manager Frank Lampard earlier this week.

Thomas Tuchel is likely to replace the outgoing Chelsea legend, though he is unlikely to be officially at the helm for this one. However, when a new manager comes in, the players usually improve their performance levels, understanding that they are essentially fighting for their places.

Their first job will be to arrest their terrible form of late, slipping from 3rd to 9th in the space of six weeks, reeling off four defeats during that period.

Wolves are struggling themselves right now, their poor stretch of form including four defeats from their last six in the league and desperately missing their star player Raul Jimenez.

However, they now have a new striker in their ranks, Willian Jose from Real Sociedad, and he’ll be expected to start contributing right away.

Chelsea FC Preview

Form Guide (all comps): LWWLW

Reasons to be cheerful:

A new manager will lift the players

Three wins from last five is not awful form

Reasons to be fearful:

The injured N’golo Kante will leave a gap in midfield

Haven’t scored more than a goal per game in six out of last seven matches

How long does a club legend have before being given the sack these days? Around 18 months is the answer at Chelsea football club, who have brutally dispensed with Frank Lampard this week.

German manager Thomas Tuchel, recently sacked by PSG, will come in shortly, but it is likely to be Chelsea’s remaining coaching staff who take charge of this match if he does not arrive in time.

Ironically, it was Chelsea’s 2-1 defeat to Wolves earlier in the season which started a downward spiral for Lampard, one which he never recovered from.

One issue the incoming manager will need to fix is his misfiring strikers, such as Werner, who have not pulled their weight in recent weeks. Once a free-flowing side earlier in the season, The Blues haven’t scored more than a goal a game in six of their last seven fixtures.

Star Man – Tammy Abraham

Is sure to play after netting a hattrick in Chelsea’s 3-1 win over Luton in the FA Cup at the weekend.

Wolverhampton Wanderers FC Preview

Form Guide (all comps): DWLLW

Reasons to be cheerful:

FA Cup win at the weekend will have boosted confidence

New striker Willian Jose brings goalscoring experience

Reasons to be fearful:

No league win from their last six – only one from nine

Will be wary of a response from Chelsea here

Wolves’ last win in the league came against Chelsea, back in December. Coincidentally, that game sparked the downturn of form for both clubs, one which has already seen the Chelsea manager removed from his job.

Santo’s job appears to be slightly safer than Lampard’s, but it’s never known just how close managers come to the sack with football such a brutal business these days.

Four defeats and two draws have followed that win back in December, and it has been plainly clear just how much they have missed Jimenez up front, scoring 10 goals from their last nine matches.

New striker Willian Jose, formally on loan at Real Madrid for a time, brings a goal ratio of better than a goal every three matches and could be what Wolves need to energise their season.

Star Man – Willian Jose

Scored 62 goals in 170 matches for Real Sociedad. He comes on loan with a £22m option to buy in the summer.

Chelsea should play with a spring in their step

     Chances at both ends

The Blues come into this as slight favourites

Based on form, Chelsea would have come into this match as favourites anyway, based on Wolves’ even worse league results lately.

On top of that, Chelsea’s players now have a new manager to impress, so are likely to play with a spring in their step.

It’ll still be close, and Wolves will have their say as well, but Chelsea could just pinch the points.
