After tournament hosts and most successful side Morocco took centre stage on the opening day, the spotlight now shifts to AFCON’s second-most successful nation—five-time champions Cameroon—as they begin their campaign.

The Indomitable Lions will be tested right away against tournament dark horses Gabon, in a clash scheduled for a 1:30 AM IST kickoff on Thursday at the Le Grand Stade in Agadir.

Head-to-head Record: Cameroon hold a slight edge in the head-to-head battles, winning four of the seven meetings so far, though Gabon’s two victories ensure this rivalry remains far from one-sided.

Cameroon Preview

Cameroon arrive aiming to reclaim AFCON glory for the first time since 2017, but their build-up has been far from smooth. The Indomitable Lions are coming off the disappointment of missing out on the 2026 World Cup, having lost direct qualification to Cape Verde before seeing their playoff hopes ended by DR Congo—despite being Africa’s most frequent visitor to the World Cup.

While their AFCON qualification was solid, topping the group unbeaten and conceding just twice, the camp has been rocked by off-field chaos, including a late managerial change and confusion over squad lists involving Andre Onana. However, under new boss David Pagou, Cameroon must shut out the noise and focus on navigating a tough group.

Fresh from rediscovering his scoring touch at Manchester United with seven goals across competitions, newly appointed captain Bryan Mbeumo will be the focal point for Cameroon. Another key figure is Brighton’s breakout midfielder Carlos Baleba, whose energy and defensive discipline will be vital in shielding the backline and blunting opposition attacks at AFCON 2025.

Cameroon Probable Starting Lineup - Epassy (GK); Tchamadeu, Wooh, Boyomo, Tolo, Onana, Baleba, Mbeumo, Dina Ebimbe, Nkoudou, Magri.

Gabon Preview

Known as the Panthers, Gabon arrive at AFCON ranked 78th in the world and set to make their ninth appearance under head coach Thierry Mouyouma. After missing the last edition, they will be eager to make an impact, though they have never progressed beyond the quarter-finals.

Meanwhile, Gabon’s route to the tournament was relatively straightforward, qualifying as runners-up in a group topped by hosts Morocco by maximising points against Lesotho and the Central African Republic.

However, they arrive carrying the frustration of a World Cup bid that fell agonisingly short—finishing just a point behind Ivory Coast before seeing their playoff hopes crushed by Nigeria. That disappointment could well serve as fuel for the Panthers at AFCON.

Former Arsenal striker and current Marseille star  Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is the standout name in the Panthers’ squad, combining with fellow veteran Denis Bouanga to rack up 15 goals in World Cup qualifying. Beyond that duo, Galatasaray midfielder Mario Lemina is another key figure to watch.

Gabon Probable Starting Lineup - Mbaba (GK) ; Oyono, Ecuele Manga, Appindangoye, Ekomie, Ndong, Lemina, Boaunga, Kanga, Allevinah, Openda.

In a demanding group that includes defending champions Ivory Coast, Cameroon—on paper the second-strongest side—will be expected to see off Gabon and Mozambique. But Gabon are no pushovers.

Despite sitting 27 places below Cameroon in the FIFA rankings, the Panthers arrive in form, unbeaten in regulation time in their last six matches, including a gritty goalless draw with Ivory Coast. Factor in Cameroon’s recent scoring struggles, having failed to find the net in three of their last four games, and a draw looks a very realistic outcome.

We predict a draw (0-0)
