Friday night promises a classic at Rabat’s 70,000-seater Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium, as hosts and favourites Morocco lock horns with five-time champions Cameroon in a mouth-watering quarter-final. 

Both sides cruised through their round-of-16 ties in regulation time, setting the stage for this showdown. This marks their fourth AFCON meeting, with the Indomitable Lions holding the historical edge, having never lost to Morocco in the competition.

Despite boasting one of Africa’s most feared attacks, goals have been hard to come by for Morocco in this tournament. Much like their opening-day struggle against Comoros, the Atlas Lions had to wait until the 64th minute to break through and seal a narrow win over Tanzania in the round of 16—once again rescued by Brahim Diaz. 

Wastefulness has been a recurring theme in that game as well, with three big chances squandered in that match.

Outside of the emphatic 3-0 win over Zambia, early goals have been elusive, and against a Cameroon side comfortable without the ball and deadly on the counter, such profligacy could prove costly on Friday.

Real Madrid playmaker Brahim Diaz heads into the clash in red-hot form, having made history as Morocco’s first player to score in four consecutive AFCON matches. Alongside him, striker Ayoub El Kaabi netted three times in the group stage, with the duo accounting for all of Morocco’s goals in the tournament so far. 

Captain Achraf Hakimi will also be key on Friday, especially after providing the decisive assist for Diaz’s match-winning strike.

Despite an unsettled build-up that saw David Pagou appointed just month before the competition, Cameroon have looked every bit the Indomitable Lions. They finished second in their group, held Ivory Coast to a 1-1 draw, won their other two matches, and edged past much fancied South Africa in the round of 16. 

Yet Pagou will not overlook the fact that his side were lucky given how wasteful Bafana Bafana were in the knockout game, creating 18 chances and four big opportunities. Cameroon, by contrast, were ruthless—winning with just 34% possession and four shots on target, a clear nod to their big-game composure. 

That experience proved decisive against South Africa, though it may count for far less against a formidable Morocco.

Cameroon’s biggest weapon heading into the Morocco showdown lies in their forward line, led by Manchester United’s Bryan Mbeumo and 19-year-old breakout star Christian Kofane. While Mbeumo is yet to find the net, his creativity has already produced an assist, whereas Kofane has made a decisive impact with two goals in his last three outings, including the match-winner in the round of 16.

Both Morocco and Cameroon arrive in the quarter-finals unbeaten, but it’s the Atlas Lions whose form truly stands out. While their wins haven’t been emphatic, Morocco rank third in the tournament for xG (7.7) and have scored seven goals, conceding just once — a solitary penalty — with clean sheets in every other match. 

They also carry an imposing 18-match unbeaten run across competitions, stretching back to August 2025. Cameroon, though, will lean on their strong head-to-head record and defensive resilience as they look to frustrate the hosts and keep Morocco at bay.
