Comoros Preview

After pushing Morocco all the way and then shutting Zambia out completely, Comoros proved they are no pushovers. Their defence stood tall, allowing Chipolopolo not a single shot on target, while they themselves thought they had the winner when Myziane Maolida finished off a fine move sparked by Rafiki Said — only for VAR to intervene. 

Even so, the Coelacanths emerged the better side, creating the game’s only real chance, registering the lone shot on target and edging possession (53%). Still, a draw won’t do this time; only a win against Mali will keep their knockout dream alive.

For Comoros to spring an upset, goals are non-negotiable — and much hinges on Myziane Maolida and Youssouf M’Changama. Maolida, their top scorer in World Cup qualifying, provides the cutting edge, while the evergreen M’Changama, with 70 caps to his name, remains the creative heartbeat after topping the assist charts in qualifiers. Besides them, Rafiki Said is the other name who could impact the game.

Despite the frustration of conceding a late equaliser against Zambia, Mali’s 1–1 draw will have given Tom Saintfiet reasons for optimism. While the Eagles offered only flashes in attack, their defence stood tall — or rather, stood strong — winning 54% of duels and denying 11 shots from inside the box. 

Come Monday night, another resolute defensive display could be all Mali need, provided Morocco do the job against Zambia in the other fixture.

Lassine Sinayoko has been Mali’s talisman so far, finding the net in both group games. But the biggest boost for the Eagles is the return of Yves Bissouma — back in the XI for the first time since October. After getting 57 minutes under his belt, the midfield anchor will be eager to stamp his authority against a lower-ranked Comoros side.
