CROATIA vs CZECH REPUBLIC Match Preview & Analysis

Croatia knocked England out of the 2018 World Cup at the Semi Finals stage, but the two teams looked completely different in their Group D opener a few days ago, with Croatia looking a little jaded.

There is still plenty of quality in the Croatian squad, although much of it is now closer to retirement than it has been previously.

One positive from that game is how well they kept the ball at times. At the end of the first half, and at the start of the second before England scored, Croatia were controlling possession quite comfortably, albeit without any end product.

The Czech Republic rode their luck at times in their game against Scotland, conceding some good chances to their opponents. It was the Czech’s quality in front of goal that stood out however, with Patrick Schick scoring twice with the second a goal of the tournament contender.

This should be a very tight game.

Teams Preview

Croatia Preview

World Ranking: 14

Best Historical Finish at the Euros: Quarter Finals, 1996/2008

Predicted Finish This Year: Round of 16

Reasons to be cheerful:

Controlled possession quite nicely at times vs. England

Undefeated in three previous meetings with Czechs

Reasons to be fearful:

Now have just two wins from their last 10

Didn’t have much to offer in attack

Third place is not a tragedy by any means, and it could still be enough for Croatia to qualify if that’s where they remain. However, there should be enough confidence within their camp for them to get some points on the board in their two remaining fixtures.

They have a good record against the Czech Republic, staying undefeated in their last three meetings, and they will be encouraged by how many chances Scotland created against them the other day.

Croatia will be wary of course, particularly at how toothless they appeared going forward against England, not really creating anything of their own despite enjoying a healthy share of possession.

A win here would put them right back on track to qualify.

Star Man – Luka Modric

Showed flashes of his brilliance in midfield but will need more from those around him here.

Czech Republic Preview

World Ranking: 40

Best Historical Finish at the Euros: Winners, 1976

Predicted Finish This Year: Round of 16

Reasons to be cheerful:

Confidence will be sky-high after Scotland win

In Schick, they have a top class number nine

Reasons to be fearful:

     Poor recent record against Croatia

Conceded plenty of chances against Scotland

The Czechs got themselves off to the perfect start against a frustrated Scotland team who will be left wondering what could have been if they’d have taken their chances.

Patrik Schick delivered two high-class finishes, including one from the halfway line and will once again look to be the difference between the two sides.

There is quality around him as well, with tall figures such as Soucek making them a real threat in the air from set pieces.

Now that they have three points, the pressure isn’t quite as high for them here, and they know that a point can see them as good as qualified.

Star Man – Patrik Schick

Is the tournament’s joint-top scorer after one round of fixtures, and he’ll be aiming to lead the line once again for his country here.

CROATIA vs CZECH REPUBLIC Winning Prediction

Czechs could be a threat from headers

Croatia must be more direct in attack

Perhaps one goal to separate the teams

Croatia are under more pressure here than their opponents, something which could drive them onto victory if they put their defeat to England behind them.

A defeat here, on the other hand, could well see them on their way home earlier than expected.

It’ll be a tight game, and the Czechs definitely have something to offer, but Croatia could just sneak it.

Croatia to win 1-0
