As a fan, it must be a frustrating experience watching Crystal Palace at times. Often, they are breath-taking in attack when they are in full flow. They can also be incredibly inconsistent and difficult to predict each week.

The Eagles are certainly easier to watch since the appointment of Patrick Vieira as manager, although they are less solid defensively than they were under Roy Hodgson.

A five-point gap has now opened up between Palace in 12th and Liverpool in 10th, suggesting that this could be yet another season of lower-half inconsistency for the Eagles.

Brighton are looking upwards and onwards, however. With four wins from their last six, including thumping wins over Liverpool and Everton, the Seagulls are focused on European football for next season.

With two games in hand on Tottenham, they could move above them if they win them both, starting here.

Crystal Palace Preview

Reasons to be cheerful:

Unbeaten in their last six against Brighton

Battled hard against Manchester United despite defeat

Reasons to be fearful:

Will miss Wilf Zaha yet again here

No league wins from their last six games

Crystal Palace collect enough points every season to be comfortably midtable, without ever looking likely to break into the top half.

It appears to be that way again, with the Eagles too inconsistent to challenge those above them. They gave Manchester United a good go at the weekend however, despite eventually losing the game.

Again, they will be without Wilf Zaha here. Their win record is dismal when he doesn’t play but it may be a sign of things to come if their star player leaves the club in the summer.

At least here we should see some fight from Palace’s players. There’s nothing like a historic rivalry to bring out the fighting spirit of the players and the atmosphere from the crowd.

Star Man – Michael Olise

Olise has plenty of ability and it’s clear that he will be the long-term successor to Wilf Zaha as Palace’s star attacker. His pace and quality can cause problems against Brighton here.

Brighton & Hove Albion Preview

Reasons to be cheerful

Four wins from their last six is a joint-high in the league

Kaoru Mitoma is in fabulous form

Reasons to be fearful

Failed to keep a clean sheet in their last nine against Palace

Very rarely beat their opponents here

Brighton’s away form has actually been better than at home this season. They are the fifth-best team in the league on their travels, compared with placing 11th at home.

It shows just how much they have improved under Roberto De Zerbi this season as well as an opportunity to be even better if they improve their form at the Amex Stadium.

While they are away here, Selhurst Park is a venue where they rarely claim victory. Battles against Crystal Palace are often tasty encounters and this will be no different, considering the Seagulls’ form.

A win here could take them to within two points of Spurs.

Star Man – Kaoru Mitoma

Mitoma has been electric for Brighton lately, scoring seven and assisting two in his last 12 appearances for the club.

Both teams prefer playing on the counter

Brighton carry the bigger goal threat

     Both teams likely to score

Crystal Palace have often come out the better of these two teams over the years, or at the very least with a point.

That said, Brighton are better this season than they arguably ever have been. Their away form has been excellent too.

With both teams preferring to play on the counter, we could see periods of the game that feel intense and end-to-end.

Come the final whistle, however, it’s likely to be all-square.
