Revived Crystal Palace host stuttering Everton in enticing clash
Crystal Palace 1-1 Everton
Tournament: Premier League 2022-2023 | Venue: Selhurst,London, Selhurst Park
Bet NowCrystal Palace’s run under returning manager Roy Hodgson couldn’t have gone better, with maximum points gained from their three games so far.
The Eagles have soared in a surely safe position, with nine points separating them and the bottom three. It’s a gap that should protect them from danger for the remainder of this season.
They have shown that there is undoubted quality within their squad and Hodgson’s approach has unlocked some of the confidence that had disappeared under Patrick Vieira.
On the other hand, Everton are fading just at the wrong time. With two defeats from their last two, and just one win from five, the Toffees are above the bottom three on goal difference only.
Even their home form has deserted them of late – can a trip to London revive their season?
Reasons to be cheerful:
Three wins in three, as many as in previous 18
Olise and Eze have become shining lights in recent games
Reasons to be fearful:
Just one win from their last 16 against Everton
Away form has been better than home this season
Rarely has a managerial change at this stage of the season worked so smoothly as it has for Roy Hodgson and Crystal Palace.
The veteran manager spoke this week about the quality of the team he has taken charge of until the end of the campaign, with players like Eze and Olise sparkling in recent weeks.
While safety is all but assured now, unless there is a huge collapse, they won’t want to be dragged back into a race for survival with a poor performance.
Their record against Everton isn’t encouraging, with just one win from their last 16 meetings with the Toffees.
Furthermore, their home form has been patchy at best this season. On home results only, they would be 15th; on away form they would be up in 9th.
Let’s see if they can continue their improvement here.
Star Man – Eberechi Eze
Eze has been one of the leading lights in recent times, given a lease of life by Hodgson. He has three goals in his last two appearances and can be devastating when roaming from midfield.
Reasons to be cheerful
Calvert-Lewin could be fit enough to play a part
Conceded fewer goals than the four teams around them
Reasons to be fearful
Just one win from their last five
Tricky upcoming run of fixtures
In Everton’s favour, the three teams currently below them in the league are in an even worse position, with Forest, Leicester and Southampton struggling to put any points on the board recently.
Everton have at least achieved some positive results under Dyche, although they have dried up in recent times. In their last eight games, the Toffees have just one victory to their name.
Worryingly, they haven’t claimed a win away from home in any of their last 11 matches, losing seven in the process.
It’s a tough ask to travel to Selhurst Park, with Palace in such improved form. These are the sorts of matches you need something from with survival in mind, however.
The Toffees have Newcastle, Brighton and Manchester City coming up in the next few weeks, too.
Star Man – Dwight McNeil
The left-footer has enjoyed a revival under manager Sean Dyche, who he was with at Burnley. He has as many goals in his last five appearances – 2 – as in his previous 71.
Palace will play with confidence and energy
Eze and Olise will cause problems
Can Everton keep things tight at the back
Crystal Palace have scored nine goals in their three games under Roy Hodgson, and in front of a re-energised Selhurst Park, they will be confident of scoring more here.
Everton’s zip under Sean Dyche appears to have faded, although the return to fitness of Calvert-Lewin, at least from the bench, will help going forward.
You feel that the Toffees need something from this game.
