Football fans in London have been spoilt on the first round of fixtures after the World Cup, with three clashes between clubs from the English capital.

Crystal Palace and Fulham will serve up a tasty encounter of their own, with both midtable clubs looking to kick on in the second half of the season.

Palace are level on points with the Cottagers, although two places behind on goal difference. There was a feeling that the Eagles underperformed during the first half of the campaign.

They have the opportunity to set things up nicely for the rest of the season under Patrick Vieira, of course, and can target a top-half spot with some confidence with the players they have got.

Fulham approached every game with a positive attitude, something which paid off on a number of occasions. There is an over-reliance on Aleksandar Mitrovic at times, but there is plenty of quality in support.

Crystal Palace Preview

Reasons to be cheerful:

Unbeaten in five meetings against Fulham

Looking to win four home league games in a row for first time ever

Reasons to be fearful:

Defender Marc Guehi will miss out through suspension

Have just one clean sheet from seven home games this season

There is a feeling that Palace have been underachievers in recent times, judging by the players at Selhurst Park and the potential that Patrick Vieira has as a manager.

He is clearly growing something positive at the club and you wouldn’t fancy going to Selhurst Park as an opponent needing a victory.

Indeed, Palace are seeking their fourth straight league victory at home for the first time in their history, showcasing the confidence they have when playing in front of their own fans.

They will need to do so without Marc Guehi, the defender who has become influential for them at the back. World Cup returners Jordan Ayew and Joachim Andersen are both available here, however.

Can they push on up into the top half, overtaking Fulham in the process?

Star Man – Wilf Zaha

Zaha has been involved in eight of Palace’s 15 league goals this season, proving his continued worth to this team. You wonder how fresh he’ll be after not taking part at the recent World Cup.

Fulham FC Preview

Reasons to be cheerful

Have already equalled their number of victories from the 2020/21 league season

Only Spurs and Arsenal have scored in more matches than Fulham’s 13 this campaign

Reasons to be fearful

Lost their previous two games before the World Cup

Just one victory from their last 28 London derbies

Fulham were one of the surprise packages from the first portion of this season, earning an early draw against Liverpool while losing narrowly to both Manchester clubs.

Their place in the top half of the league is deserved, as is the credit they have received for the positive football they’ve played so far this season.

Mitrovic has, without doubt, been their best player and they have suffered when he’s been unavailable. Unfortunately, that may be the case this weekend as the Serbian is nursing a foot injury.

Still, the Cottagers have an excellent record on Boxing Day fixtures and haven’t struggled for goals so far this campaign.

They don’t enjoy playing other teams from the capital, it has to be said – they’ve lost 22 of their last 28 against fellow London clubs.

Star Man – Aleksandar Mitrovic

Fulham will hope that Mitrovic is fit as they depend on him for goals – nine in 12 so far this campaign. You fear for his club if he’s unavailable.

Palace are so strong at home

Fulham’s record against London clubs is worrying

You fear for Fulham is Mitrovic is out

Neither club has been too affected by players leaving for the World Cup, although that poses a problem of its own in that they may not be match sharp.

Palace are always a different beast when playing at home and you wonder whether Fulham have what it takes to stop them here.

If Mitrovic plays then Fulham have a fighting chance, but you would expect the home team to prevail here.
