On the surface, it looks as though Crystal Palace have suffered a poor start to the season, going on a run that has left them just above the relegation places.

However, when you consider that their three defeats have come against Arsenal, Manchester City and Chelsea, you see that Palace have had a tougher run of fixtures than most to start the season.

Now, they face Leeds at the start of a more favourable run of games, which sees Patrick Vieira’s men also face Wolves, Everton, Southampton and West Ham. They must start to pick up points in those games.

Leeds have been inconsistent too at the start of the season. On the one hand, they thrashed Chelsea in one of their best performances in recent times, while in other games they’ve been poor.

They sit in 12th, which you feel could be the sort of position they finish the season in, judging by their ups and downs at the start.

This one is difficult to call.

Crystal Palace Preview

Reasons to be cheerful:

     Easier run of fixtures upcoming

Haven’t lost in their past six home meetings with Leeds

Reasons to be fearful:

Have a habit of conceding late goals

Haven’t scored first in four of their last six games

For all of Crystal Palace’s attacking threats, they find themselves near the foot of the Premier League.

Patrick Vieira is clearly a talented coach, and it will have frustrated him to watch his side win only one of their seven games so far this season.

While their three defeats have come against some of the best teams in the country, they’ve also drawn games against teams they would feel they should have beaten.

In doing so, they’ve built up two bad habits: conceding first in games and conceding late on too. It’s something that they will need to address if they hope to move up the table as the season progresses.

Against Leeds, their strikers should have the space they love, as Leeds also like to play a front-foot style of football.

They also have a good record against their opponents, especially at home in recent seasons. Can they continue that here?

Star Man – Wilf Zaha

Much is made of how heavily Palace rely on their star player, and it’s true. Zaha is also their top goalscorer, which makes it all the more important that they find a way to help him play at his best.

Leeds United Preview

Reasons to be cheerful

The return of Patrick Bamford is a big boost

A win could propel them into the top half

Reasons to be fearful

No wins from last four, including two defeats

Poor record away to Crystal Palace in recent seasons

Leeds are another side that has seen their early good form drop off, like Brentford and Fulham around them in the table.

Their superb win over Chelsea hasn’t been repeated since, followed by two draws and two defeats. They’ve only scored three goals during those four games, too, compared to six goals in their previous three.

The good news here is that Patrick Bamford could be fit to start the match, having come on as a substitute in the draw against Aston Villa.

On the flip side, Luis Sinisterra will miss out through suspension, having received a red card in the previous game. He has been one of Leeds’ better players since signing for the club.

They seem to struggle away from home, something which has led to six games at Selhurst Park without a win.

Can they turn that around here?

Star Man – Patrick Bamford

Before his injury last season, the striker was on the verge of playing for England. He’ll need time to recover his fitness, but he can be a top player again for Leeds.

Could have an end-to-end feel about it

Palace have the better attackers on display

     Home support will help Palace

This could be the sort of game Palace need to rediscover their winning form.

Leeds are inconsistent at the best of times and are missing one or two key players. They also like to press forward themselves, which could leave gaps in behind for Zaha and co. to exploit.

The fans at Selhurst Park will be up for this one too, and that shouldn’t be underestimated.

It’s a game that could go either way, but Palace should sneak it.
