The Eagles are still in search of their season’s first Premier League victory and that question might linger even beyond the upcoming game week as they face formidable Liverpool. Dwight McNeil’s brace crushed Palace hearts and cancelled out Guehi’s goal in what was an impressive opening half for Palace last week. Eagles boss, Oliver Glasner will want to turn the tide with the bare facts painting a grim scenario, as this is the joint-second worst start to a campaign in 12 seasons.

In 30 previous Premier League meetings between both these sides, 14 have been won by the away side (47%). This is the highest away win ratio of any of the 109 fixtures to be played 30+ times in the competition’s history.

Arne Slot has a completely different challenge on his hands. The Dutchman brushed aside any hopes of hands or fingers on the title at this juncture of the season. Their midweek Champions League fixture was smoothly dealt with as they cruised past newcomers Bologna on home soil. In doing so, Arne Slot became the first man in Liverpool’s distinguished history to win 8 out his of first 9 games in charge, which may possibly translate into 9 out of 10.

Head-to-Head Record : Palace and Liverpool have in totality met on 52 previous occasions in all competitions. The Eagles won 11 of those, the Reds won 32 while 9 matches ended in a draw.

Current Standings :  Both teams have had contrasting starts to the season. Palace are in red flag territory, sitting in 18th position after amassing 3 points. Meanwhile, Liverpool lead from the front with a total of 15 points.

Crystal Palace Preview

Austrian manager Oliver Glasner said that his side lacked concentration against Everton. A repeat of that against a cut-throat Liverpool side could result in dire consequences. Crystal Palace have lost 11 of their last 14 Premier League fixtures against Liverpool (W1, D2), albeit that sole victory came in their last meeting at Anfield.

Crystal Palace have also conceded more Premier League goals against Liverpool than they have against any other opponent both overall (69) and at home (38). The Reds are responsible for the Eagles’ two biggest home defeats in the competition's history (6-1 in August 1994, 7-0 in December 2020).  Every Palace keeper was made to keep their gloves warm, and Dean Henderson will surely take note of that.

A point to prove

No one would’ve expected Palace to endure such a start to the season. Especially since they won 6 of their 7 games on the back end of last season. Michael Olise’s 50 million departure to Bayern has left a gaping hole in the squad. Add to that, individual errors in key areas and moments, and you’ll know why Palace sit in 18th spot.

That being said, a lot of players left the club this summer, Joachim Andersen being one of them, while 7 new additions were made to the squad. The Austrian will want to get the balance in his squad right with gifted players such as Adam Wharton and Ismaila Sarr who could dictate the proceedings.

Jean-Phillipe Mateta has scored 15 goals in his last 11 home games for Crystal Palace in all competitions, netting multiple goals in 5 of these 11 appearances (4 braces, 1 hat-trick).

Stats That Matter

Crystal Palace are ranked 9th in ball possession with 51.7% averaging 13.8 shots per game. The Eagles score an average of 0.83 goals per match with a shooting accuracy of 29%. Jean-Philippe Mateta is the top scorer with 2 goals this season. Both Marc Guehi and Eberechi Eze have scored 1 goal apiece. The team has an average of 3.2 saves per game, the 8th best in the season. They have conceded an average of 1.50 goals per match.

Injury list

Chadi Riad, Matheus Franca, Cheick Doucoure and Chris Richards are all sidelined for their home side’s affair at Selhurst Park.

Crystal Palace Probable Starting Lineup -  D.Henderson (GK), M.Lacroix, M.Guehi, J.Lerma (DEF), Munoz, Wharton, Kamada, Mitchell (MID), Eze, Nketiah, Mateta (FWD).

Liverpool FC Preview

This fixture slightly tilts in Liverpool’s favour. The Reds have won all three of their Premier League away fixtures this season - only in 1990-91 and 2019-20 have they ever won their opening 4 away games in a league campaign. They also went on to win the Premier League in one of those season’s.

Slot is looking to become just the fourth Premier League manager to win each of his four away games in the competition after Felipe Scholari (first 8), John Gregory (first 5) and Bobby Gould (4). Liverpool are also unbeaten in their last 9 at Selhurst park. This is also the fifth time that Crystal Palace are facing Liverpool, with the Reds top of the table - the Eagles have lost their previous four by an aggregate of 17-4.

Liverpool capitalised on Man City’s 1-1 draw against Newcastle and leapfrogged right to the apex. But, as Slot said, the Reds have not played teams at the top of the table yet. Those will soon come, as they face Chelsea and Arsenal, in what could see 4 teams battle it out for glory.

Players to watch out for

Mohammad Salah has scored in all three of Liverpool’s Premier League away games so far this season. There have been 9 previous occasions of a player scoring in his side’s first four on the road in a single campaign - the Egyptian could be the first player to do it twice (first in 2021-2022).

Stats That Matter

Liverpool are ranked 5th in ball possession with 59.5% averaging 15.2 shots per game. The Reds score an average of 2 goals per match with a shooting accuracy of 44%. Luis Diaz is the top scorer with 5 goals this season. Mohamed Salah is the second best with 4 goals in the 6 matches played this season. The team has an average of 3 saves per game, the 10th best in the season. They have conceded an average of 0.33 goals per match.

Injury list

Harvey Elliott will be spending quite a while in the treatment room. He will currently be accompanied by Federico Chiesa and Diogo Jota who have both picked up knocks. The manager is yet to make an assessment on the fitness of both candidates.

Liverpool Probable Starting Lineup -  Alisson (GK), Van Dijk, Konate, Trent, Robertson (DEF), Mac Allister, Endo, Jones (MID) Diaz, Nunez, Salah (FWD).

The stats are in favour of the tourists and Liverpool will relish any chance of  leaving London having acquired a solid three points. Palace have yet to settle in as a squad. Liverpool will be their first big test after draws against Chelsea and United. Oliver Glasner will not want to sit back in what should prove to be a great spectacle before players depart on International duty.  We back Liverpool to win this fixture.
