Stuttering Liverpool travel to Crystal Palace with both sides in need of points and confidence
Liverpool to win 1-0
Tournament: Premier League 2022-2023 | Venue: Selhurst,London, Selhurst Park
Bet NowJust as it looked as though Liverpool had started to turn a corner this season, with two consecutive league wins and goals for new signing Cody Gakpo, they were handed a proper thrashing by Real Madrid in midweek.
It means that Liverpool are now realistically out of all four trophies this season and need a strong end to the season and a rebuild in the summer. Even Jurgen Klopp’s job isn’t quite as safe as it once was.
Still, they have the opportunity to continue their improved league form here and can push up to 6th with victory, depending on the results of Fulham and Brighton.
Crystal Palace are in the middle of a passive, unadventurous spell of form that has seen them go seven games without victory. Their performances recently have been short of ideas and quality.
The absence of Wilf Zaha through injury has been sorely felt and Patrick Vieira’s men just don’t have the bite and aggressive required to push forward up the table.
It could be a tough game for them if Liverpool are up to standards.
Reasons to be cheerful:
Have been excellent at winning when going behind this season
Zaha has a chance of being fit here
Reasons to be fearful:
Dreadful upcoming fixture list
Still awaiting their first league win of 2023
Crystal Palace must be a tough team for their fans to watch these days, with the players not seeming capable of really pushing themselves onto greater things.
They are yet to win a game in 2023, and their upcoming fixture list doesn’t look particularly kind either. Villa, Manchester City, Brighton and Arsenal follow this game over the next few weeks.
While Palace are not in a relegation battle currently, they may well be after that run of games.
On a positive note, Wilf Zaha may be fit enough to return to action, although faces a late fitness test on the morning of the game. Tyrick Mitchell picked up a knock in the draw against Brentford but should start here.
They claimed a draw against Manchester United recently and they will hope to inflict a similar result on a team from the same city here.
Star Man – Michael Olise
Zaha may be fit enough to play on the left wing, but Olise has nailed down the right side this season. He provided an expert ball for Eze’s equaliser against Brentford and possesses good quality on his left foot.
Reasons to be cheerful
Two consecutive wins in the league despite European problems
Salah, Nunez and Gakpo appear to be linking well upfront
Reasons to be fearful
Thiago, Luis Diaz, Arthur and Konate remain out injured
Defensive changes required after 5-2 thrashing in midweek
It seems to be one step forward and another back at the moment for Liverpool, who conceded five home goals in a Champions League game for the first time ever this week.
It leaves them facing the exit of another competition this season and means they will end the campaign without a trophy. Still, there is hope of a top four finish, especially if they can build a winning run going forward.
They have two consecutive wins under their belt from games against Everton and Newcastle and now face a poor Crystal Palace team who haven’t won in some time.
Liverpool’s forward players Gakpo, Salah and Nunez have finally formed a decent partnership and Roberto Firmino and Diogo Jota are fit to be involved here.
Star Man – Darwin Nunez
Has scored in his last two appearances, including a quite brilliant flick against Real Madrid. He seems to be finally justifying his £85m price tag in the summer.
Two teams lacking confidence
Could be a low-scoring contest
Palace must stay in the game until final moments
Liverpool’s cup worries can be soothed if they build a winning run in the Premier League. The top four isn’t completely out of sight and they certainly have the players to achieve it.
With the likes of Salah, Nunez and Gakpo firing, they can overcome most defences, but they have to keep things tighter at the back.
Crystal Palace have a great record of coming from behind this season and if the game is tight heading into the closing stages then they could pinch something.
However, Jurgen Klopp will want a response after Liverpool’s poor defeat in midweek and he’ll probably get it.
