Crystal Palace ended a three-game losing streak in all competitions by claiming a point off high-flying Manchester United in midweek.

It was a result that seemed unlikely given how little Palace offered going forward throughout the game, but Michael Olise’s wonderful last-gasp free kick gave Patrick Vieira’s men a timely lift.

You can’t predict this Palace team from one week to the next, and are just as likely to blow Newcastle away at home as they are to get thrashed themselves. It’s that inconsistency that means they remain in the bottom half.

Newcastle continue to be one of the hardest teams to beat in the league this season. With just the one defeat this campaign, they remain in the top four and just a point behind Manchester United.

They will be without one of their most influential players here, with Bruno Guimaraes out injured, and will consider themselves a little lucky to have claimed all three points against Fulham last weekend.

Crystal Palace Preview

Reasons to be cheerful:

Earning a point against Manchester United should boost confidence

They’ve earned 13 points from losing positions this season – only behind Spurs

Reasons to be fearful:

Just two wins from their 11 home games against Newcastle

And it’s one win from their last eight in all competitions this season

For large spells of the game against Manchester United, Palace looked toothless in attack and unable to lay a glove on a comfortable opponent.

Ultimately, that comfort proved to be United’s downfall as they failed to grab a second goal and kill the game off. Michael Olise’s perfectly placed free kick in stoppage time stole a point for the Eagles.

It will take more than that to earn something from Newcastle, who have the league’s tightest defence this season. Palace’s record against Newcastle is especially poor too.

While Palace have the second-best record when it comes to earning points from losing positions this season, they have only one win from their last eight games in all competitions.

It’s a record that won’t improve their league position any time soon. It’s a spell that has coincided with a weak run of form for Wilf Zaha, who has gone seven games without a goal for his club.

Star Man – Michael Olise

His brilliant free kick against Manchester United means he has contributed to all of Palace’s last four goals – he’s netted two of them and assisted the others.

Newcastle United Preview

Reasons to be cheerful

Won five of their 11 away games against Palace

On the verge of setting a new club record for unbeaten run – 15 games

Reasons to be fearful

Bruno Guimaraes will miss out here

Were lucky to claim all three points against Fulham last weekend

Results like the one Newcastle claimed over Fulham last weekend proved that it could be the Magpies’ season in terms of breaking into the top four.

Sometimes, when things are going for you, it can seem like the world is with you. Mitrovic’s missed penalty would have put Fulham 1-0 up, although Alexander Isak’s goal at the end was well-deserved.

As it stands, the Magpies are just a point behind Manchester United and four off City. With Tottenham and others too inconsistent below them, this is a great opportunity to claim Champions League football. They also have a Carabao Cup Semi-Final on their hands next week too.

The worrying point here is that Bruno Guimaraes will miss out through injury. On the three occasions that has happened this season, Newcastle have failed to win.

They’re on a terrific run though and you wouldn’t put it past them claiming all three points here.

Star Man – Alexander Isak

Since returning from injury, Isak has started to get back to his best form. He could become the first Newcastle player to score in four of his first five Premier League appearances.

     Should be an open game

Palace will prefer playing on the counter

Newcastle’s added quality to pay off

Although they claimed a point against Manchester United the other night, Palace should have been beaten comfortably if Manchester United had been more ruthless.

Considering Newcastle’s imperious defensive record, you wonder how Crystal Palace are going to break them down, while keeping a clean sheet at the other end.

Newcastle have enough about them these days that they can cope with Bruno Guimaraes, as good a player as he is.
