Both Crystal Palace and West suffered setbacks in their push for survival in midweek, ending up on the losing side to knock some of the wind out of their sails.

It means that both teams need another win or two to be sure of survival, although Crystal Palace are closer to remaining a Premier League team next season than their opponents.

The Eagles were surprisingly poor away to Wolves, offering little of the attacking threat we’ve seen in Roy Hodgson’s first month in charge. Can they rebound at Selhurst Park here?

West Ham took the lead against Liverpool in their 2-1 defeat, with David Moyes criticising VAR after the game for not noticing a controversial handball decision.

It means they are just five points ahead of the bottom three with six games remaining. Under Moyes, the Hammers probably have enough to survive, but a win here would work wonders for them.

Crystal Palace Preview

Reasons to be cheerful:

A win and a draw from Hodgson’s first home games in charge

Won their last meeting with West Ham

Reasons to be fearful:

No goals from their last two matches

And they’ve failed to score in 15 of their 32 games this season

Crystal Palace have probably secured their Premier League spot for next season, courtesy of three successive wins on the bounce and a draw from Hodgson’s first four games in charge.

There were signs that they had taken their foot off the pedal in their latest game, however – a 2-0 defeat to neighbouring club Wolves.

They are not yet mathematically safe, but with three winnable home games remaining this season, they’ll feel confident of picking up enough points.

After this season, Steve Parish will have to decide which direction he wants to take the club, and the permanent manager they appoint will be crucial in that.

Here, they need to sharpen up in front of goal. After scoring nine in Hodgson’s first three games in charge, they’ve failed to hit the net in their next two.

That means they’ve failed to trouble the scoresheet in 15 of their 32 games this season.

Star Man – Michael Olise

The youngster is capable of some incredible moments going forward, though he’ll need to improve his consistency to reach his full potential. He has eight assists this season, alongside two goals.

West Ham United FC Preview

Reasons to be cheerful

Unlucky to have lost to Liverpool recently

Scored 11 goals from their last four in all competitions

Reasons to be fearful

     Inconsistency is their main enemy

Have less time to prepare than their opponents

West Ham enter this game just 72 hours after their defeat to Liverpool, whereas Crystal Palace have had an extra day of rest. At this stage of the season, that could prove crucial.

The Hammers have been across Europe too this season, so who knows how their legs will hold up in the final few weeks of the season?

That said, they are earning just enough points to stay clear of relegation for the moment. Another win or two from their remaining six games should be enough to see them safe.

Recently, David Moyes’ men have struck gold in front of goal, netting 11 times in their last four matches. They’ve also won their last two away league games, showing that they won’t be pushovers here.

Star Man – Lucas Paqueta

The Brazilian attacking midfielder has found his feet at West Ham in recent games. He’s netted in his last two appearances for the club – the same number as he managed in his first 26 for the Hammers.

     A game light on goals

     Palace need to rediscover sharpness

Winner likely to secure safety this season

Crystal Palace have struggled for goals in recent weeks, and although West Ham have been more free-flowing, the proximity of these two in the table means that this could be a tight one.

The winner is likely to be safe this season, especially if it’s Crystal Palace. Three points would take them to 40, which is often seen as the gold standard for survival.

West Ham have been good away from home lately, but their inconsistency means that they are hard to depend on.
