CRYSTAL PALACE vs WOLVERHAMPTON WANDERERS FC Match Preview & Analysis

Crystal Palace entertain an equally out-of-form Wolves this weekend, with both sides floating in between the bottom three and the middle of the table.

Palace are without a win since their victory over Sheffield United at the start of 2021, their only win for nine league matches and despite a close 3-2 scoreline in their most recent defeat to West Ham, it wasn’t close for much of the match.

The Eagles haven’t been helped by a string of injuries lately, but they are now almost as close to the relegation zone as they are to the top half of the table.

Wolves are arguably suffered from an even worse period of form lately.

The West Midlands side arguably had the best chance of the 0-0 draw against Chelsea in midweek, but have now gone eight matches without victory in the league.

With both sides struggling for goals and confidence, this one could be tight.

Teams Preview

Crystal Palace Preview

Form Guide (all comps): WLDLL

Reasons to be cheerful:

New signing Mateta could be involved here

Shot off the mark with an early goal against West Ham

Reasons to be fearful:

Only won three of their 10 home matches this season

     Several first-team players missing

Crystal Palace have picked up just enough points of late to stay clear of the danger zone, though will have an eye over their shoulder with teams below them starting to pick up points at a greater rate.

Burnley and Brighton have both won more recently than the Eagles, meaning that the gap is closing beneath them. Fortunately, in Roy Hodgson they have a manager experienced in these types of battles.

His first objective here will be to field a fully fit squad, with up to six players missing here, many of them usual starters in the team.

Palace have a reasonably kind run of fixtures upcoming, with Newcastle, Leeds, Burnley, Brighton and Fulham coming up in February, all teams around them in the bottom half.

Star Man – Wilf Zaha

Is often the one bright spark for Palace currently – his brilliant goal early on couldn’t help his side to a result against West Ham.

Wolverhampton Wanderers FC Preview

Form Guide (all comps): WLLWD

Reasons to be cheerful:

Beat Palace in their recent FA Cup game

Could have nicked three points against Chelsea

Reasons to be fearful:

One win from eight is a poor return

Only Newcastle and Fulham have gone longer without victory

Wolves have dipped into the transfer market in order to cope better without the injured Raul Jimenez, though their problems are more than just scoring goals.

There now seems to be a lack of confidence in the side, a club performing at a lower level compared with last season. After 20 matches last campaign, they were 7th in the table with their sights set on European football.

Now, they seem set for a disappointing season in the bottom half of the table, unless they can improve quickly.

Willian Jose could come into the side in one of Wolves’ forward positions, particularly with Adama Traore still seeking his first league goal of the season.

Crystal Palace have an identical record to Wolves currently, and Wolves will be anticipating a tight game here.

Star Man – Pedro Neto

His workrate at the top end of the pitch often brings Wolves chances. He was unlucky to see his effort against Chelsea go over the bar.

CRYSTAL PALACE vs WOLVERHAMPTON WANDERERS FC Winning Prediction

A tight game with few chances

     Two teams lacking confidence

Likely to end as a draw

If either of these two teams could put their recent form behind them, come out with a really positive attitude and dominate the game, they would likely take away three points.

As it is, both teams are lacking that confidence which is so important in football. They have no momentum and plenty of injuries between them.

It’s likely to end up all square here.
