Unfortunately, the game between Denmark and Finland will always be remembered for the sad events that unfolded in the first half, as star player Christian Eriksen suffered a cardiac arrest on the pitch and had to be given life-saving treatment.

The positive news is that Eriksen is making a recovery, but that didn’t help those Denmark players who had to witness a tragic event that will have affected their ability to focus on anything else.

After their 1-0 defeat, they are joint-bottom of the group alongside Russia, and there is little hope of them beating world number one nation Belgium here.

The Belgians are usually fearsome during the group stage of a major tournament and proved so again with a comfortable victory over Russia. Romelu Lukaku will be among the favourites to pick up the Golden Boot for top scorer at the end of the competition.

A further three points here would all but confirm their progression to the Round of 16.

Denmark Preview

World Ranking: 10

Best Historical Finish at the Euros: Winners, 1992

Predicted Finish This Year: Group Stage

Reasons to be cheerful:

Will be determined to put in a good performance for Eriksen

That was their only defeat in last six matches

Reasons to be fearful:

     Poor recent record against Belgium

How will they be able to concentrate after what happened against Finland?

You can barely begin to imagine how the Danish players’ mental health is holding up right now, having watched on in horror as medics tried to resuscitate one of their own.

On the football side of things, that defeat against arguably the weakest team in the group leaves Denmark in a difficult position, with tougher games against Belgium and Russia to follow. Ideally, they need at least four points from the six on offer from those games.

Unfortunately, from both a footballing and emotional point of view, it seems unlikely that Denmark have the tools to damage Belgium here.

They lost both games to them last year, and it’s hard to see how they can fire on all cylinders here.

Star Man – Simon Kjaer

The Danish captain has been applauded across the world for his actions in helping Eriksen after his collapse and leading his teammates through the difficult scenes afterwards. Can he inspire them again here?

Belgium Preview

World Ranking: 1

Best Historical Finish at the Euros: Runners-up, 1980

Predicted Finish This Year: Semi Finals

Reasons to be cheerful:

Currently on a 10-game unbeaten run

     Good record over Denmark

Reasons to be fearful:

Timothy Castagne’s campaign is over after a head injury

Vertonghen may also miss out at the back

Belgium were as impressive as was to be expected from the number one nation in the world, easing past Russia in their opening group game last week.

In truth, they are expected to win all three of their games in Group B and a similar type of victory is on the cards here against a stricken Denmark side.

There are one or two injury concerns at the back. Leicester’s Castagne will miss the rest of the tournament after a head collision against Russia, while Jan Vertonghen could also sit this one out after picking up a knock.

Striker Lukaku, Alderweireld and Vertonghen are all close with Denmark’s Eriksen, and his situation may affect their mindsets.

Star Man – Romelu Lukaku

Absolutely loves playing against so-called lesser opposition, and will expect himself to score again here.

Lukaku to score at least once

Denmark to put up a good fight

Belgium to win comfortably after initial tense start

The only thing that would stop Belgium winning this game is if some of their players’ mindsets are not completely focused on the task at hand, which would be understandable given the situation Denmark are in.

The Danish fans will be proud of their team whatever the result, and their players could give it a real go here.

That said, Belgium have the players to make short work of the situation here, and are strong favourites.

Belgium to win 2-0
