In match 2 of Group C, the former African Cup of Nations champions, Egypt, will take on the newcomers from the CONCACAF U-20 runners-up, the Dominican Republic. The match will take place at the Stade de la Beaujoire stadium in Nantes on July 24 at 8:30 IST.

Egypt, headed by Rogerio Micale, made it to the event through the CONCACAF U-20 tournament, where they failed to retain the title as they lost out to Morocco in the final. Paris 2024 will be the 13th time that the Pharaohs have made it to the football tournament at the Olympics.

On the other hand, the Dominican Republic will be making its debut as a football team at the Paris Olympics. Coached by Ibai Gomez, like their counterparts, they finished runners-up in their continental competition, which saw them lose out to the USMNT by a margin of six goals to nothing.

Egypt Preview

The Pharaohs are known for their royalty, and in this tournament they will certainly miss the regal presence of their talisman, Mo Salah. He was instrumental in Egypt  qualifying for the quarterfinals of the 2012 London Olympics. Though Rogerio Micale can take heart in the fact that his side did manage to reach the last 8 in the Tokyo Olympics despite Salah's absence. For that, he will require plenty of assistance from the overage players, Mohamed Elneny and Ahmed Sayed Zizou, to guide the youngsters to the quarterfinals and beyond.

Ahead of the tournament, the Pharaohs played out a 1-1 draw against Iraq and a 2-1 victory over Ukraine. Pyramid FC forward Ibrahim Adel scored in the Ukraine game. For Egypt to do well in the tournament, their rising star Adel, along with the man with 98 International caps, Elneny, and the national team regular, Ahmed Sayed, would have to do an exceptional job.

But the star of attraction is obviously their coach, Rogerio Micale. Given his pedigree as a coach— he won gold with Brazil in the 2016 Olympics—one can expect Egypt to do something special in this edition. Expect him to start with a 4-3-3 formation and go for an outright win.

Egypt Probable Starting XI - Alaa; Fayed, Abdelmeguid, Eid, El-Debes; Elneny, Shehata, Atef; Sayed, Adel, Faisal

Dominican Republic Preview

The Dominican Republic may be newbies to the tournament, but they do possess players who have the experience of playing for some of the biggest clubs in Europe. With a highly-rated Spanish coach, Ibi Gomez, at the helm and led by Leeds United’s Junior Firpo, this side isn't the one to be meddled with.

However, leading up to the event, they got thrashed by the hosts, France, 7-0, in a friendly match. Not to mention they have lost three of their five games at the U23 level while conceding 15 goals in the process. But then, somebody like Firpo wasn't part of those sides.

Given his experience, and his partnership along with Luiyi de Lucas and Real Madrid’s Edgar Pujol, the backline could hold fort against most teams in the tournament. If they can hold their lines at the back, then Los Quisqueyanos have potent goal-scoring options like Peter Federico of Valencia and Oscar Urena to hurt teams up front.  In terms of  tactics, we expect Gomez to deploy a 4-4-2 formation with Peter Fedrico and Oscar Urena as the targeted men upfront.

Dominican Republic Probable Starting XI: Bosl; Urbaez, Pujol, Lemaire; Nunez, Marizan, Messina, Montes de Oca, Urena; Lorenzo, Gonzalez

It's even Stevens according to some of the best betting sites, as it's a tough match to predict. However, when it comes to goals, most punters expect to see a lot of goals in this clash, aided by the fact that both  teams struggle to keep clean sheets. The xG for this match is 3.5. Considering this a tough game to call, we have to take into account the experience of the coaches leading the sides. In that case, Rogario Micale is the clear winner. Thus, we predict a win for Egypt or a draw.
