England head into Matchday 2 with the chance to seal their place in the knockout rounds after opening their campaign with an impressive 4-2 victory over Croatia.

Ghana, meanwhile, will look to build on their hard-fought 1-0 win over Panama and are likely to adopt a disciplined approach aimed at frustrating the Three Lions.

It may not promise a free-flowing spectacle, but the clash has all the ingredients of an intriguing tactical battle.

Head-to-head Record: The only competitive meeting between the two sides ended level at 1-1.

England Preview

England's 4-2 victory over Croatia was arguably one of the most entertaining matches of the tournament so far, and the Three Lions will be delighted to have come out on top.

The first half felt frustratingly familiar, with England struggling for creativity and relying on two Harry Kane goals—one from a retaken penalty and another from a set-piece—to stay ahead. But after the break, Thomas Tuchel's side transformed.

Their tempo, movement and attacking intent overwhelmed Croatia, resulting in five big chances, nine shots on target, and an xG of 1.83. Goals from Jude Bellingham and Marcus Rashford capped off an impressive second-half display, while Jordan Pickford's crucial save at 3-2 preserved England's momentum. If they can consistently play at that level, they will be genuine contenders.

One of the pre-match talking points was Tuchel's decision to start Ezri Konsa ahead of Marc Guéhi alongside John Stones. Konsa endured a few nervy moments, but his place in the side is unlikely to be under immediate threat.

Since Tuchel's arrival, he has been one of England's most trusted players and ranks among the team's most-used starters, suggesting the manager's faith in him remains strong despite the scrutiny.

Key Players

Harry Kane is already off and running with two goals, but Bukayo Saka is the bigger question for England.

After missing the start of last game through injury concerns, it will be interesting to see whether he comes straight back in ahead of Noni Madueke, who had a mixed outing. Saka’s work rate, balance and creativity on the flank give England a different edge, and that could make him a key figure if he starts.

Team News

Bukayo Saka still remains a fitness concern, but Marcus Rashford, who had been dealing with muscle discomfort, has been cleared to play. Beyond that, Thomas Tuchel appears to have a relatively clean bill of health for now.

England Probable Starting Lineup

Pickford (GK) ; James, Stones, Konsa, O’Reilly, Anderson, Rice, Saka, Bellingham, Gordon, Kane

Ghana Preview

Unlike England, Ghana had to grind out their opening victory. Their clash with Panama was hardly a spectacle, but the Black Stars will not care one bit after Caleb Yirenkyi popped up deep into stoppage time to snatch a dramatic winner.

The match perfectly reflected Carlos Queiroz's philosophy. Ghana were disciplined and organised, frustrating Panama and allowing just one shot on target and an xGA of 0.11 in the first half.

Going forward, however, they offered almost nothing, registering an xG of 0.00 before gradually growing into the contest after the break.

As Panama pushed forward, spaces opened up and Ghana capitalised, finishing with an xG of 1.25 and ultimately getting the reward their patience deserved.

That victory has put the Black Stars in a promising position in the race for the Round of 32. With eight of the 12 third-placed teams progressing, even a draw against either England or Croatia could prove invaluable, while goal difference may yet become a crucial factor.

Team News

Having suffered an injury during their opening fixture, Ghana’s first choice keeper Lawrence Ati-Zigi has been ruled out from the England game. In his absence, Benjamin Asare will step in between the sticks as he did in the last match.

Ghana Probable Starting Lineup

Asare (GK); Senaya, Adjetey, Opoku, Mensah, Yirenkyi, Sulemana, Owusu, Nuamah, J. Ayew,  Semenyo

The tempo should be clear from the outset, with England expected to dominate possession and probe more aggressively than they did in the first half against Croatia. Ghana will try to stay compact and draw confidence from teams like Cabo Verde who frustrated bigger opponents, but England’s quality should eventually tell.

Once the first goal arrives, the game is likely to open up—and that would leave Ghana with too much to chase. England to win.

Meanwhile, the bookmakers have England as clear favourites, pricing the Three Lions to win at 1.21, while Ghana are marked at 13.00 and a draw at 6.20.

England to win (2-0).
