Can Everton follow up impressive point against City with a result against Brighton?
Everton 1-1 Brighton
Tournament: Premier League 2022-2023 | Venue: Walton, Liverpool, Goodison Park
Bet NowThere weren’t many who gave Everton hope against Manchester City recently, with the Toffees travelling to the Etihad on the back of three consecutive defeats in the league.
As fate would have it, they pulled off one of their best results of the season, holding out against the Premier League champions and earning a precious point.
As it happened, it was a point that kept them clear of the relegation zone, with Nottingham Forest achieving the same result. They still have a huge task ahead of them this season.
Brighton were somewhat blown away by the firepower that Arsenal possess under Mikel Arteta right now. The Seagulls conceded four in their heaviest home defeat of the season.
In truth, they were made to look the ordinary team that we know they are not. Roberto De Zerbi’s men came up against an excellent side and had no answer to it, despite scoring two of their own later in the game.
Reasons to be cheerful:
Have won four of their five home games against Brighton
Draw against City could motivate them to improve their performances
Reasons to be fearful:
Just one league victory in nine matches
On the verge of losing three home games in a row
Everton put in a fighting performance to hold out against Manchester City, with the Toffees clinging on for a point in the last 25 minutes or so.
It could turn out to be just what Frank Lampard and his men require to motivate the team for the remainder of the season. With just a point between themselves and the bottom three, they need to improve quickly.
While they hold a strong home record over Brighton in recent times, their own form at Goodison Park has been poor this season. Another defeat here would leave them with three consecutive losses at home.
Although many Everton fans appreciate that Lampard has a tough job on his hands to turn their club around, they may not be so patient if they slip into the relegation places.
Here, Amadou Onana will miss out in midfield after picking up a suspension, while Yerry Mina, Michael Keane and Anthony Gordon will face late fitness tests after missing the City game with illness and injury problems.
Star Man – Demarai Gray
With four goals to his name, Gray is slowly but surely becoming the Toffees’ main threat in front of goal. His effort claimed a point against Manchester City and his pace can worry any defence.
Reasons to be cheerful
Looking to win three consecutive away league games for the first time in their history
Excellent record in matches at the start of the year
Reasons to be fearful
Only one clean sheet from eight away games this season
Just three wins from De Zerbi’s first 10 games in charge
Although losing to the current best team in the league is nothing to be ashamed of, Roberto De Zerbi will be frustrated with how they came unstuck against Arsenal in their last game.
To concede four goals at home is something not usually associated with Brighton, who pride themselves on solidarity and strong organisation.
Here, they will have Moises Caicedo back from suspension which should help strengthen the midfield. Alexis Mac Allister should also return after his World Cup triumph with Argentina.
Although Brighton scored twice in that defeat to the Gunners, they lack what you might call a genuine goalscorer – one who will get you 20+ goals each season.
Until they have that, you feel they will struggle to go much higher than their current league position – 9th.
Star Man – Leandro Trossard
Is Brighton’s top scorer this season but needs more support from others on a regular basis. Having Caicedo back in midfield should release him to cause more damage going forward.
Lots of energy but few chances on goal
Will be an interesting midfield battle
Pace at either end could settle it
Despite the league positions of these two teams, this should be an even contest.
Everton know how to dig in at home and, in front of their fans for the first time since that marvellous point against Manchester City, will be given plenty of support here.
Brighton will be rocking after conceding four against Arsenal and will be keen to put in an improved performance themselves.
It could end up being a tactical battle in midfield, with both sets of attackers not quite firing on all cylinders right now.
For that reason, a draw seems most likely.
Everton 1-1 Brighton
