Everton and Burnley are two sides looking in opposite directions right now.

For the home side, they are four points off a Champions League place and the opportunity to end their season with the same flourish with which it started.

They still have a game in hand, which could help them close the gap, but in reality are going to need victories from almost all of their remaining 11 fixtures to see off Chelsea, the team which beat them last weekend.

As for Burnley, they are the same amount of points ahead of the bottom three and have their sights firmly set over their shoulders in the hope that they are not dragged into a full relegation scrap in the final two months of the season.

Having spent some time in the bottom three, Burnley improved enough to climb up the table, only to have stalled of late. You feel they can’t afford to lose too many more games.

Everton FC Preview

Form Guide (all comps): LWWWL

Reasons to be cheerful:

Have won five of their last six home meetings with Burnley

They have already amassed only three points fewer than the whole of last season

Reasons to be fearful:

Recent defeats to Man City and Chelsea could be damaging to their top four push

Six of their nine defeats this season have come at home

As much as Everton keep pushing for that 4th Champions League spot, they seem destined to fall short each time it appears within their grasp.

Their season has come in three peaks so far: at the start of the season when they were top for three weeks, at the end of 2020 when they had risen back to 2nd, and just last weekend before they were beaten by Chelsea.

At each turn, they have lost matches to send them tumbling down the table, taking away their opportunity to cement their place near the top.

Their goals have dried up a little too, with Calvert-Lewin (still their top scorer) netting just twice in his last 13 appearances. They haven’t scored more than a single goal in each of their last three games.

Here, however, they should have the majority of possession and will be able to match Burnley physically.

Star Man – Richarlison

Is virtually Everton’s only goal threat right now, with four goals in his last five league appearances.

Burnley FC Preview

Form Guide (all comps): DDLDD

Reasons to be cheerful:

Have kept the second highest number of away clean sheets this season

Will remain confident of staying up this season

Reasons to be fearful:

Just the one victory from the last nine league games

     Poor at starting games

At one stage, Burnley looked to be home and dry this season, after pulling together an impressive run of five victories from nine games over the New Year period.

Since then, however, just one victory has followed and the Clarets have been left looking over their shoulders once again at the teams catching up beneath them.

Surprisingly for a team a low down the table as 15th, Burnley have a remarkably good clean sheet record this season, particularly away from home, with their six clean sheets second only to Aston Villa this season.

It is, however, their efforts in front of goal that have seen them struggle, and with 20 goals this season, only Sheffield United have scored fewer.

Star Man – Chris Wood

The Burnley centre forward has two goals in his previous appearances against Everton.

Everton will see this as a chance to claim three points

The Toffees will claim most possession

Burnley will look to keep things tight

As it works out, this is Burnley’s last fixture in March as they are not involved in any cup competitions. What that means is that they can have a real go here before resting for important games against the likes of Southampton and Newcastle next month.

In reality, they’ll probably play with the intention of not losing the game and trying to deny any space for the Everton players.

That said, you feel Everton need to win here to keep up the pressure on teams above them.

Everton to win 2-0
