First Merseyside derby of the season sees desperate Everton host improving rivals Liverpool
Liverpool to win 2-0
Tournament: Premier League 2022-2023 | Venue: Walton, Liverpool, Goodison Park
Bet NowLiverpool continued their revival in midweek, coming from behind to beat an impressive Newcastle side that was missing several key players.
Nevertheless, Liverpool will feel better about themselves, having picked up six points from the last six available. Their first three games of the season were disappointing, going without a win and losing to Manchester United.
They are still not performing at their absolute best, it has to be said, and they need a 98th-minute winner against the Magpies to secure three points.
Everton are one of only three teams in the league that still await their first victory of the campaign. Frank Lampard continues to see pressure piled upon his team, despite avoiding defeat of late.
At home, the Toffees’ fans will be desperate for their first win of the season, especially against their closest rivals.
Liverpool are favourites, but could we see a shock here?
Reasons to be cheerful:
Toffees have avoided defeat in the last three games
New signings should improve the squad
Reasons to be fearful:
Lost their last two against Liverpool
Confidence will continue to drop the longer the wait for a win goes on
Everton have somewhat steadied the ship of late, with the Toffees securing three consecutive draws to pick themselves up from back-to-back defeats at the start of the campaign.
Frank Lampard still has a world of pressure on his shoulders and a big defeat here would see that increase. Upcoming fixtures against Arsenal and West Ham could expand that further.
A couple of weeks ago, a struggling Manchester United went up against Liverpool, their historic rivals, and put in their best performance of the season in front of their home fans.
Everton should take inspiration from that, seeing as they need to do exactly the same this weekend.
It’ll be tough, considering they’ve only won one of their last 26 meetings with Liverpool in all competitions. That’s quite the history to overcome.
At least it appears they have managed to hold onto Anthony Gordon, who was a long-term target for Chelsea. His goals are the only positive for Everton right now.
Star Man – Anthony Gordon
Has scored in Everton’s last two games, helping to earn draws in each. Now he appears set to stay at the club, it could help him settle down and play even better.
Reasons to be cheerful
Consecutive wins will lift the dressing room
Incoming midfielder Arthur will provide relief in the middle of the pitch
Reasons to be fearful
Still not playing at their best and Everton will be right at it
Have conceded in all but one of their games so far
Liverpool’s winner in the 98th minute against Newcastle saved manager Jurgen Klopp from some difficult questions at full-time.
Had Fabio Carvalho not smashed the ball into the roof of the net to earn three points, it will have been two more dropped for the Reds.
As it is, they have two wins under their belts and currently sit in 5th place. They will be overtaken by Manchester United if the Red Devils win their fixture against Leicester.
Liverpool’s injury concerns deepened in that game, with captain Jordan Henderson replaced after 70 minutes due to a hamstring injury. It appears as though Arthur Melo, from Juventus, will sign on loan to help ease Liverpool’s midfield concerns.
Here, they play their closest rivals. They know Everton are desperate for a result, but they will be ready for the fight.
Star Man – Roberto Firmino
The Brazilian has bounced back from criticism in recent weeks to score three and assist three in their last two games. He is enjoying a run of matches with new signing Darwin Nunez still suspended.
Liverpool will boss possession as usual
Everton will be confident they can score
The longer the game is goalless, the more Everton will believe
Everton must start this game quickly, in the hope that they can put Liverpool on the back foot.
Nevertheless, their main aim is to stop Liverpool from scoring here. Regardless of their current position, avoiding defeat against Liverpool is always a positive result.
That said, if they can hold out at one end and then go on and grab the winner at the other, all the better for Frank Lampard and his men.
Liverpool are favourites to win, but don’t rule out a twist in the tale.
