On Sunday, Everton were on the receiving end of a 4-0 scoreline. Come midweek, the Toffees have managed to turn those tides, instead thumping Wolves by the same scoreline. Such has been the season Everton are having. But none of this profligacy will be tolerated when they take on neighbouring foes in Derby number 204. Last time out, Everton surprised everyone by beating Liverpool after having succumbed to a five game winless run in the fixture. Derbies are anybody's game.

Everton needed this win against struggling Wolves as they begin an uphill climb against some of the big Premier League heavyweights. The blue side of Merseyside will host Liverpool and Man City, with trips to Arsenal and Chelsea in between. Pressure was mounting on Sean Dyche who now has only his second home win of the season. The next 4 games will be pivotal to see where he stands in the eyes of the board.

The Reds extended their lead on Man City by 11 points after walking all over them in a 2-0 win at Anfield. But, that deficit was cut by the Magpies in an away trip to St.James’ Park. Liverpool still leads City by 9, Chelsea and Arsenal by 7. December is a tricky month with fixtures coming in thick and fast.

Slot has won 18 out of 21 games in charge, his sole defeat coming against Forest and draws away against Newcastle and Arsenal. The Dutchman has far superseded expectations at Anfield. Jurgen Klopp left big shoes to fill, but Arne is making it look so easy. The next acid test lies at Goodison park. It will be interesting to see how he navigates his strategy against a survival side.

Head to Head Record - Both teams have played each other 203 times. Everton have won 54 of those affairs. The Reds have dominated with 82 wins. While 67 games have ended in a stalemate.

Current Standings - The alarm bells were ringing at Goodison park before a terrific midweek display by Everton, as they now find themselves 15th position with 14 points. The Toffees are only 5 points clear from relegation. Meanwhile, their neighbours are at the apex, 7 clear of second place, with 35 points to show.

Everton FC Preview

Everton won 2-0 in their last Premier League game against Liverpool in April, last winning consecutive league Merseyside derbies in the 1984-85 campaign. Merseyside derbies have always been anyone’s game. It’s the sort of fixture where form does not count going into the game. The red and blue side of Merseyside have had quite a few rights. It happens to be the fixture to have seen the most red cards (23) and been drawn 0-0 the most (12) in Premier League history.

No side has scored more 90th minute winners against an opponent in the competition than Liverpool have against Everton (5). Divok Origi’s iconic moment is never to be forgotten in 2018 by those in blue. The Toffees have won just four of their 47 Premier League matches against teams starting the day top of the table (D9 L34). Everton manager Sean Dyche has lost 12 Premier League matches against Liverpool (W3 D2), only losing more against Man City (14) and Arsenal (13).

Goal scoring woes

Before the Wolves game, Everton was one of the lowest scoring teams in the competition. The goals had dried up until Wednesday’s drubbing of Wolves, courtesy to two own goals by Craig Dawson. One of the four goals came from a beautiful 25 yard free-kick by veteran Ashley Young, that curled around the wall and nestled into the corner. The last game Everton won before this in the Premier League was a 2-0 win away against Ipswich on the 19th of October.

The manager obviously must’ve used a hard stance approach after a shocking display a couple of days back at Old Trafford. The win against Wolves was Everton’s biggest league victory since 2019 when they beat United. If Calvert-Lewin can get onto a scoring streak, the Toffees can climb the ranks, with only 3 wins separating them and fifth place Brighton.

Injury - Chermiti, Broja, Iroegbunam and Garner are all ruled out.

Everton Probable Starting Lineup - Pickford (GK), Young, Tarkowski, Branthwaite, Mykolenko (DEF), Doucoure, Gueye, Mangala, McNeil, Ndiaye (MID), Calvert-Lewin (FWD).

Liverpool FC Preview

This is Arne Slot’s first meeting with Everton as Liverpool manager. Only one Reds boss has won their first ever league Merseyside derby when that match has come away from home, with Kenny Dalglish overseeing a 3-2 victory in September 1985. One man who is having the time of his life will be key to Liverpool’s success, and that man is Salah. Mohamed Salah has scored seven Premier League goals against Everton – only Steven Gerrard (9) has scored more Merseyside derby goals in the competition.

Liverpool’s 2-0 loss in this exact fixture last season ended a 12-game unbeaten away run in the Premier League against Everton (W3 D9). They’ve not lost consecutive visits to Goodison Park since a run of three between 1992 and 1994. Knowing Liverpool has hit top form, they will want to get the job done quickly before departing for midweek Champions League duty.

Reds run rampant

It is still early days in the Premier League, but Liverpool have reached newfound heights, with victories against Real Madrid and Man City within the span of four days. Arne slot thinks that a better picture as to who will emerge triumphant can possibly be predicted but only after 19 games. That means Liverpool still have 5 more to go to reach that stage. There is a high possibility they will accomplish that feat, but the festive month is always tricky. An injury here, a short lapse there and momentum could be killed.

Despite that, Liverpool look the real deal. The Reds made 4 times champion Man City look like novices with a strew of attack upon attacks. At St.James’ the story wasn’t very different. The Reds were part of a highly entertaining fixture. Slot went through the emotions and his never say never attitude almost helped Liverpool clinch another formidable victory. In 16 of the Premier League's 31 campaigns, the team sitting top on 25 December have gone on to lift the trophy, but on 15 occasions they have missed out.

Injury - Alisson Becker, Bradley, Konate, Diogo Jota, Tsimikas and Chiesa are all part of the treatment room.

Liverpool Probable Starting Lineup - Kelleher (GK), Robertson, Trent, Van Dijk, Gomez (DEF), MacAllister, Gravenberch, Jones (MID), Gakpo, Salah, Nunez (FWD).

Derbies are the most difficult matches to predict. These are games where passion dictates performance. Teams may be on a losing streak, but come Derby Day, they’re different beasts. Tired legs will amount to more goals being leaked. Everton got a much-needed victory at home.

A win against Liverpool could properly kick start their campaign. But Liverpool are a whole different beast in Arne Slot. The team’s calculated and composed method over Klopp’s heavy metal football has proved worthwhile. Mohammad Salah has been in the form of his life, hitting new levels. Reds fans will want that contract offered soon, so as to give the Egyptian more of an uplift. Sean Dyche is known to cause upset to Liverpool.
