Manchester City’s phenomenal charge for the treble this season heads to Everton, where a win could take them four points clear of Arsenal with the Gunners playing Brighton later in the day.

City’s fantastic winning run in all competitions came to an end in midweek, where Real Madrid held Pep Guardiola’s men to a 1-1 draw in Spain.

The return leg, three days after this fixture, will occupy much of City’s thoughts, but they cannot afford to slip up in this crucial league game.

Everton are still battling for their lives at the bottom of the league and will give this game everything they have. They have pulled off big performances under Sean Dyche and need another one here.

Following Leeds’ draw with Newcastle, the Toffees have now slipped into the bottom three, with just three games remaining.

Everton FC Preview

Reasons to be cheerful:

Claimed a 1-1 draw away to City earlier in the season

Earned 17 points from their 15 games under Dyche

Reasons to be fearful:

Just one victory from their last 19 games against City

No team has scored fewer home goals than Everton’s 15

Everton took a dramatic step closer to Premier League survival last weekend, thrashing Brighton in a shock 5-1 victory at the Amex Stadium.

It was a win that no one saw coming, and temporarily launched the Toffees out of the bottom three. They find themselves back in 18th after Leeds’ draw with Newcastle 24 hours before this game kicks off.

Sean Dyche’s tactics were spot on in that game, sitting back and holding a narrow shape, so they could push forward quickly on the break. It worked like a charm.

The Toffees are likely to employ a similar tactic against City here, although their opponents are a step up from Brighton in truth.

They have a poor record against City, although they claimed a point from their first meeting of the season.

Star Man – Dwight McNeil

McNeil has worked with Dyche before and appears to be returning to his best form under the current manager. His brace against Brighton shows exactly what they need more of going forward.

Manchester City FC Preview

Reasons to be cheerful

     Won 10 consecutive league games

Dropped points in only two of their 18 games against bottom half teams this season

Reasons to be fearful

Will likely rotate players ahead of huge Madrid clash next week

Arsenal will overtake them if City lose and the Gunners win

Manchester City’s race for a historic treble is reaching the business end, with just seven games between them and one of the greatest ever achievements in English football.

They have an important second leg against Real Madrid coming up, but first they have to go to Everton and see off a side fighting for their lives near the bottom.

City are likely to rotate one or two players here, meaning that the likes of Mahrez, Alvarez, Foden and co. could come in to freshen things up.

While that shouldn’t limit their enormous quality, changing the line-up can sometimes bring about negative effects.

They have an exceptional record over Everton, of course, and are expected to win here. It won’t be easy, however.

Star Man – Riyad Mahrez

With a number of changes set to happen for City this weekend, Mahrez could well come into the side. He’s provided four assists in his last three league appearances and deserves a game on the right wing.

Manchester City need to keep up their intensity

Everton will employ similar tactics as against Brighton

Likely to be a close scoreline

Manchester City’s treble hopes don’t rest completely on this game, but they do need to keep on winning to stay in charge of the title race.

Heading to Everton, with the home side off the back of a 5-1 win over Brighton, won’t be easy, but Guardiola knows that his players can’t take their foot off the gas.

Everton will set up similarly to their game against Brighton, but they’ll need to be even better to get anything here.
