Manchester United looking to put derby thrashing behind them away to improved Everton
Manchester United to win 1-0
Tournament: Premier League 2022-2023 | Venue: Walton, Liverpool, Goodison Park
Bet NowManchester United received a significant reality check last weekend, when they were humbled by their closest rivals Manchester City.
There was some optimism going into the game that they could challenge City more than they had done in recent times, although many felt that City would still go on and win the game.
It was the manner of the defeat, particularly in the first half, that showed the size of the task facing Erik ten Hag and his squad. Can they bounce back from that defeat here, against an in-form Everton side?
Frank Lampard has solidly gone about his business at Everton, slowly improving a team that looked relegation candidates under Rafa Benitez last season.
He has acquired sensible players in the transfer market, and they’ve only lost two of their opening eight games.
At Goodison Park, the crowd will be up for this one. Can they take something from this one?
Reasons to be cheerful:
Unbeaten in their last six games
Good record against United in recent seasons
Reasons to be fearful:
Haven’t won three league games in a row for 18 months
Among the lowest scoring teams in the league
There are positive signs coming out of Everton that haven’t been seen at the club for some time.
After Carlo Ancelotti departed to manage Real Madrid, the club have drifted on and off the pitch, at one stage looking as though they could face relegation last season.
To his credit, Frank Lampard has steadied the ship and the team suddenly look as though they could become a top-half club once more.
The good news this weekend is that Dominic Calvert-Lewin is ready to play once again, after suffering multiple injury problems over the past year or so.
The Toffees also have a strong record over United in recent seasons, including a 1-0 win over them in their most recent meeting in April.
There will be plenty of confidence surrounding the team here, something which their fans will pick up on and make it difficult atmosphere for United to contend with.
Star Man – Amadou Onana
Summer signing Onana is beginning to find his feet in the middle of the pitch for Everton. He’s an aggressive player with plenty of ability too and he’ll be confident about bossing United’s midfield.
Reasons to be cheerful
Followed up 4-0 defeat to Brentford with win over Liverpool
Attacking players’ form is a cause for hope
Reasons to be fearful
Poor away form continues in the league
Haven’t beaten Everton in two years
On a positive note, the last time that Manchester United were handed a heavy defeat, they responded with a great win over Liverpool.
Having been thrashed by Manchester City last weekend, the hope for them is that they can do a similar thing here, albeit against an in-form Everton.
The Toffees are somewhat of a bogey team for United in recent years. You have to go back to November 2020 for their last victory, which was their only win in seven meetings.
You wonder how United will cope in midfield, an area where they are often overrun. Everton have some talented players in this area, such as Onana, and we could see Casemiro come into the side to bolster United’s engine room.
The best bit about United is going forward. Rashford won Player of the Month in September, while Antony has scored twice since his arrival. Anthony Martial scored twice from the bench against City last weekend too.
It’ll be a tough test away to Everton, but they have the players to do it.
Star Man – Marcus Rashford
The attacker needs a big month with a spot in England’s World Cup squad up for grabs. He scored twice in midweek, and looks a lot sharper than he did last season.
Will be a hard-fought game
Could be a low-scoring contest
Everton’s fans will make it difficult for United
We shouldn’t underestimate that United played in the Europa League on Thursday night, with a long flight back from Cyprus not helping the preparations for this one.
That said, United’s players will have plenty to prove after their defeat last weekend, and you’d expect an improvement here.
Everton have the tightest defence in the league, so we may see a close-fought contest.
United have greater quality, but they must be at their best to win here.
