Struggling Everton host in-form Newcastle in battle between top and bottom
Newcastle to win 2-1
Tournament: Premier League 2022-2023 | Venue: Walton, Liverpool, Goodison Park
Bet NowThere are two ways of looking at Sean Dyche’s reign at Everton so far.
The first is that they have won just three of his 12 games in charge, with their home form dropping away of late and the team looking less likely by the week to climb to safety.
The other is that they would be in a far worse position without him at the helm and the Toffees stand a far better chance of survival without him. Either way, they need to start putting points on the board.
As for Newcastle, things are looking very rosy up on Tyneside, with the Magpies looking to cement 3rd place with a win here.
Manchester United will have two games in hand by the time Newcastle have played this game, but the Magpies are in terrific form and appear a certainty for a top four spot now.
Reasons to be cheerful:
Beat Newcastle at home last season
Dyche has beaten Eddie Howe on six of their nine meetings
Reasons to be fearful:
Won just one of their last nine in the league
Lost each of their last three midweek fixtures
While there is an acceptance that Sean Dyche is very much the right man for the job, results have fallen off a cliff since those early few weeks where the mood lifted around Goodison Park.
They won two of their first three under Dyche, including a brilliant result against Arsenal, although just one victory has followed in their last nine.
The Toffees slipped into the bottom three as a result of their draw against Crystal Palace and Leicester claiming four points from their last two games.
Here, key midfielder Doucoure returns from a three-game suspension, while veteran Seamus Coleman could be involved after a hamstring concern. Mason Holgate starts a one-game suspension.
It’s a tall order, but they need to win this one.
Star Man – Dwight McNeil
McNeil is Everton’s only player to have scored and assisted more than once at home this season, which shows the depth of the club’s problems. He has five goal involvements at Goodison this campaign.
Reasons to be cheerful
Thumping 6-1 win over Tottenham was their best performance under Howe
Have scored 54 league goals – their highest tally at this stage of a season
Reasons to be fearful
Just one clean sheet from their last 11 outings
Fabian Schar is an injury concern while Saint-Maximin remains out
For Eddie Howe and his players, it doesn’t get any better than their 6-1 win over Tottenham at the weekend. They scored five within 21 minutes and were thoroughly rampant at St. James’ Park.
Their opponents, as dreadful as they were, had no answer for Newcastle’s energy, organisation and attacking instinct.
Newcastle are now looking assured of a top four finish, but will want to go one better and secure 3rd place too. Their run-in holds one or two tough challenges, such as Arsenal and Brighton, but they’ll be confident.
Bruno Guimaraes, one of their stars of the season, should be fit to play despite an injury concern, although key defender Fabian Schar will face a late fitness test.
This Magpies team has won 59 points this season, only five short of their all-time best in the top division.
Star Man – Alexander Isak
Isak was electric against Tottenham at the weekend, scoring twice and looking every inch of a world-class striker. He now has 10 goals in his 15 league appearances this season.
Newcastle will boss possession
Everton must play on the front foot here
An early Magpies goal could kill home confidence
Newcastle have it all in their hands right now and could easily end up the 3rd best team in the Premier League at the end of the season.
They have some very winnable games between now and the end of the season and deserve all the credit they have received this campaign.
Everton have a large hole to dig themselves out of and they need to start by improving their home form. They aren’t favourites to do so here.
