Formidable Everton side kick off the weekend against woeful Newcastle
Everton to win 2-1
Tournament: Premier League 2020-2021 | Venue: Walton, Liverpool, Goodison Park
As we saw when Sheffield United beat Manchester United the other day, there are no certainties in football when teams at opposite ends of the table meet.
Everton will know that they cannot afford to be complacent here with so many teams around them all fighting for a top four finish this season. Three points here could lift them up into those spots, perhaps temporarily at least before the other sides play across the weekend.
They’ve been great value recently, and fully deserved their draw against 3rd place Leicester in midweek.
On the other hand, Newcastle’s problems seem to know no end. They lost their fifth consecutive league game earlier in the week, narrowly going down against Leeds, although they did manage to score for the first time in four matches.
We are expecting a response from Newcastle at some point, but Everton are certainly favourites here.
Form Guide (all comps): LWWWD
Reasons to be cheerful:
Have two games in hand over 4th place West Ham
Five wins from last eight matches is good form
Reasons to be fearful:
Home form has been poor, winning just two from last seven
Calvert-Lewin has now gone six league games without scoring
Everton have a great chance of making the top four this season, and showed their credentials by earning a promising draw against 3rd place Leicester at the weekend.
Understandably, there is still a long way to go this season, but of the teams currently outside the top four, they have arguably the greatest chance of sneaking in.
They must improve their home form, however. Despite having the third-best away form in the league, they’ve fallen down the pecking order at Goodison Park, taking only 14 points from 27 available this season.
This match represents a great opportunity to set that right, with Newcastle’s confidence arguably the lowest in the league right now, with everything mentioned about the club both on and off the pitch.
Star Man – James Rodriguez
Scored a peach of a goal against Leicester and remains a high-level performer after his blistering start to the season.
Form Guide (all comps): LLLLL
Reasons to be cheerful:
Scored their first goal in four matches vs. Leeds in midweek
Incoming coach Jones may improve methods
Reasons to be fearful:
Five straight defeats in the league
Gap to relegation zone is now just six points
Newcastle’s disastrous run of form is inching them ever closer to the bottom three, with those teams below them picking up points at a far greater rate than the Magpies.
At Leeds, they showed a glimmer of promise by notching their first goal in four fixtures, but it was not enough to prevent them slipping to their fifth consecutive league defeat, and their 8th from their last nine in all competitions.
Shocking form usually leads to the manager losing his job, though Steve Bruce remains at the helm for now. Should his side slip even further towards the danger zone, action may be taken by the owners.
They have some talented players, including Almiron who scored in midweek, though their leaky defence and a complete lack of confidence is stalling their season.
Star Man – Allan Saint-Maximin
Has the ability to lift the team with his creativity, and now fully back from injury, can show what he’s all about
Hard to see how Newcastle can take anything here
Everton to see more of the ball
The Toffees to briefly move into the top four
Newcastle manager Steve Bruce is currently enduring the worst spell of his career, having gone 11 games now without victory.
It’s hard to see that stopping here, with Everton in good form, and Newcastle’s away record dire.
Everton to win 2-1
